In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, by Erik Larson

Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Devil in the White City, delivers a remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.
A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.
Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2011: In the Garden of Beasts is a vivid portrait of Berlin during the first years of Hitler’s reign, brought to life through the stories of two people: William E. Dodd, who in 1933 became America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s regime, and his scandalously carefree daughter, Martha. Ambassador Dodd, an unassuming and scholarly man, is an odd fit among the extravagance of the Nazi elite. His frugality annoys his fellow Americans in the State Department and Dodd’s growing misgivings about Hitler’s ambitions fall on deaf ears among his peers, who are content to “give Hitler everything he wants.” Martha, on the other hand, is mesmerized by the glamorous parties and the high-minded conversation of Berlin’s salon society—and flings herself headlong into numerous affairs with the city’s elite, most notably the head of the Gestapo and a Soviet spy. Both become players in the exhilarating (and terrifying) story of Hitler’s obsession for absolute power, which culminates in the events of one murderous night, later known as “the Night of Long Knives.” The rise of Nazi Germany is a well-chronicled time in history, which makes In the Garden of Beasts all the more remarkable. Erik Larson has crafted a gripping, deeply-intimate narrative with a climax that reads like the best political thriller, where we are stunned with each turn of the page, even though we already know the outcome. --Shane Hansanuwat

The evil that men do
By Chris Swanson
It has been observed that for evil to win all that needs happen is for good men to do nothing. That was what the United States government did, at least officially, for much of the lead-up to World War II. Too often chances to speak out and try to stop the madness that was engulfing Germany were ignored. Too frequently the atrocities were overlooked. Too many times our response to the crisis over there was nothing, nothing, nothing...

But there were exceptions. George Messersmith, who worked at the Berlin embassy, was one of those who tried, often in vain, to bring about some change in the US policies, though he was often ignored as having too vivid of an imagination. So, too, were various Jewish groups in the USA, though they were often ignored for being Jewish. And, eventually, so did William Dodd, the United States ambassador to Germany, though he was ignored because, frankly, too many people didn't want to believe any of what was happening in Berlin.

Before reading this book I had a slightly better than average knowledge of the history of World War II and what led up to it. But even for me there were things to learn. I'd never heard of Dodd or Messersmith. Never heard of Rudolph Diels, or Ernst Hanfstaengl. I knew, at least a bit, about the Night of Long Knives and some what lead up to it, including Ernst Rohm's penchant for pretty young men, but I didn't really grasp much of what was going on that led up to it.

Now, thanks to Erik Larson's latest work, I know these people and I have a much, much improved understanding of what was going on in Germany from 1933 to 1938. Larson gives you a great "on the ground" view of what was really happening, what people thought was happening, what everyone said was happening and why the differences between these things matter. You really get a feel for how Berlin functioned, or didn't function, during this time period.

Larson's previous work, Thunderstruck, where he tried too hard to link the stories of Dr Crippen and Marconi, didn't really work for me, which was a disappointment, since The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America remains one of my favorite books. I'm happy to say this book is at least as good and engaging as "Devil in the White City". This is an excellent, well-written, suspenseful book. Even though I did know the fates of some of the people involved, Larson's writing was still engaging enough to keep me interested, and to occasionally make me wonder if my memory of their lives was wrong (it wasn't).

Anyone with even a casual interest in the events leading up to the war will find this an invaluable read. It's easily the best book I've read this year, and likely to stay that way. A truly wonderful read!

Another telling work by Erik Larson
By Steven Peterson
This is the fourth book written by Erik Larson that I have read. In my view, this quartet is a pretty powerful body of work: The Devil in the White City, Thunderstruck, and Isaac's Storm)--and now In the Garden of Beasts. As with Larson's other works, there are several layers to this work. Larson begins by noting that (Page xiv): "This is a work of nonfiction."

At one level, this is a portrayal of a family. Key characters are William Dodd, an academic desperate to write a book on the South who finds himself oddly enough tapped to become the American Ambassador to Germany in the very early years of Hitler's rule of the country. There is also considerable detail given to Dodd's daughter, Martha. She was coming off a failed marriage and she (and her brother and William's wife) accompanied Dodd in his service in Germany.

At another level, the book is about the gathering horror of the Third Reich. Sometimes, Germany seems like a modern, civilized country. At other times, though, the darkness of Nazism manifests itself. One small vignette: H. V. Kaltenborn's advocacy of Germany--and his family's terror at a Hitler demonstration where they were frightened by thugs for not carrying out the German salute with the arm. Other small incidents that portend what is to come pop up over the course of the work, providing a dark backdrop to the surface story.

We see Dodd's interaction with key leaders such as Goebbels and Goring. We read of him trying to protect American interests while becoming concerned about what was happening in Germany. And seeing how his superiors did not want to hear negative reports from him. His daughter? She enjoyed her freedom with a series of romances--including with the famous World War I pilot, Udet, and--extraordinarily enough--the head of the Gestapo, Diels .

There is tautness to the work, as it moves toward its climax with the Night of the Long Knives. The book closes out with Dodd and his family's return to the US and events that took place thereafter.

Another wonderful work by Erik Larson.

History as a novelist might present it.
By Jill Meyer
Erik Larson is not a novelist but his books on historical subjects are as beautifully written as if a novelist had written them. He has written about Chicago and the 1893 World's Fair, a terrible hurricane in Galveston, Texas, and a doctor/murderer in London. In all his books, he juxtaposes two events or characters and flits between the two. In this book, "In the Garden of Beasts", he presents the Dodd family of four in 1933 and the growing menace of Hitler and the Nazi party. It's brilliant writing at its best.

William Dodd was a professor at the University of Chicago and a product of a southern upbringing. He was mild-mannered and subtle, but fairly ambitious, career-wise. As a self-described "Jeffersonian Democrat", Dodd had come to the attention of newly-inaugurated Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 when Roosevelt and his State Department were looking for a new US ambassador to Germany. Adolf Hitler had come to power in Germany at about the same time as Roosevelt in the United States. Both faced Depression-wracked countries and both set about helping to heal the economic woes. Hitler's plans were much more ambitious at that point; getting out of the Versailles Treaty restrictions and cleansing Germany of her Jewish population were also on the agenda. Roosevelt's appointment of William Dodd as the United States Ambassador to Germany brought many questions from old diplomatic "hands" at the State Department as well as among Roosevelt's aides. Was Dodd "tough" enough to deal with Hitler? And, what WAS "tough enough" in dealing with Hitler and the growing German menace? And, what WAS the "growing German menace"? Lots of questions in 1933 wouldn't be answered until later; later, after "The Night of Long Knives", "Krystalnach", and the whole bloody butchery of WW2.

Dodd brought with him to Berlin in 1933 his wife, and two grown children, Martha and Bill, Jr. It was Martha - then aged 22 and full of life and with a secret, soon-to-be-divorced husband back home - who flirted with both the night-life and the political intrigue of Berlin. She landed in exalted circles - both artistic and political - and lead a rather exhausting love life with Germans, Americans, and Russians.

Life in Berlin in 1933 was easy-going, but still "edgy" as Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party fought for a political future. President Hindenburg was still alive and Hitler was his Chancellor. He was still not in command and would not be so until Hindenburg's death nearly a year later. Hitler was also fighting within his own ranks. His old comrade, Ernst Rohm, led the SA and it was a threat to Hitler. "The Night of Long Knives", in 1934, was the coup staged by Hitler as he got rid of Rohm and a lot of other political enemies. William Dodd, sickened by the violence and the knowledge that Hitler was on the road to world-power, began to speak out firmly about the Nazi regime and the threat it posed.

"In the Garden" is a masterpiece of writing for those interested in the subject. His book, "Devil in the White City", with its story of Chicago and a mass-murderer, might have appealed more to a wider audience, but this book is wonderful for the history buffs among us. I also appreciate the sources he lists at the end of the book.

Perfect book for helping small children with their grief.
By Secret
I bought this book to help my four year old daughter deal with the future grief of losing my father. It is such a difficult topic because at this age children are still not fully capable of understanding the permanency of death. She still has trouble understanding that he will never come back. However, she frequently asks to read this book at times when she is really missing him and wants to talk about it. This book has good questions towards the end that can help to get little ones talking about how they are feeling. In one particularly touching moment, the questions led to a good discussion where she told me that she thinks about him often and realizes that he lives on in her, just like in the Lion King.

I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with how to help their children deal with their grief. Warning, you will probably need tissues as you read through the book, but it is a good way to get both of you talking about your feelings at a very difficult time.

Easy to understand
By Beverly A. Moyer
We had 2 deaths in this month both where there were small children left behind. A 24 year old father and a Grandmother. Because of this I searched for books on death directed at young children. I Miss You,: A First Look at Death is wonderful. Written very well addressing small children. I like where it says "When someone dies their body stops working". You can never tell a child that they were sick, because they are afraid if they get sick. If you tell them they died while sleeping, they will not want to go to sleep. If you say they were old, they don't want to get old. I had one child's grandmother had a lot of back pain and it ended up being cancer. Then he thought if you got a back ache you would go to heaven. This is a fantastic book on death for children and I highly recommend it to have on hand before you need it although it arrives fairly quickly. I am an owner/operator of a daycare for over 40 years and have just introduced this into my daycare.

Good book for intended audience
By Douglas D
I bought this book for our four-year-old grandson who is very curious about death, asking poignant questions about the subject.

This book appears to be tailored for children, probably a little older than four, who have recently experienced the loss of someone close to them. Besides the text for the child, it has some notes to the adults about how to present and discuss the material. I recommend not pursuing that path if the child is too young to understand the subject matter at that depth.

Omitting the sidebars, this book is well done, even for our four-year-old.

The Barefoot Lawyer: A Blind Man's Fight for Justice and Freedom in China, by Chen Guangcheng

“[Chen’s] story is a reminder that the desire for basic human rights . . . arises from the deep well of the human spirit.”―The New York Times Book Review

It was like a scene out of a thriller: One night in April 2012, China’s most famous political activist―a blind, self-taught lawyer―climbed over the wall of his heavily guarded home and escaped. After he turned up at the American embassy in Beijing, high-level negotiations finally led to his release and a new life in the United States.

Chen Guangcheng is a unique figure on the world stage, but his story is even more remarkable than we knew. The son of a poor farmer in rural China, he was determined to educate himself and fight for the rights of his country’s poor, despite his disability. Repeatedly harassed, beaten, and imprisoned by Chinese authorities, in the end Chen made the most dangerous choice of all: freedom.

Both a riveting memoir and a revealing portrait of modern China, The Barefoot Lawyer tells the story of a man who has never accepted limits and always believed in the power of the human spirit to overcome any obstacle.

Review

“A fierce memoir of rural life and dissent.”―Evan Osnos, The New York Review of Books

“[Chen’s] story is a reminder that the desire for basic human rights . . . arises from the deep well of the human spirit.”―The New York Times Book Review

“How [Chen Guangcheng,] a blind man, escaped such a lockdown alone and on foot, navigating toward a neighboring village via smells and ‘a kind of batlike echolocation,’ is an amazing tale.”―The Wall Street Journal

“Riveting . . . It is remarkable how Chen’s lone voice was able to shake the state to its foundations. . . . Chen has lived most of his life in darkness but here casts a beacon of light into the shadows. . . . Poignant yet inspiring.”―The Washington Post

“[A] riveting memoir … Chen has an excellent sense of pace and attention to detail, and he knows how to fill in the cultural gaps for those less familiar with China. The result is an eminently readable, albeit chilling memoir that will grip the attention of readers everywhere.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Tense and tightly written, [The Barefoot Lawyer] is a suspenseful window onto Chen's struggle, with disaster constantly on the horizon.… Richly layered and vibrant, Chen's stirring tale of bravery and perseverance in the face of oppression is a moving call to arms for the ideas of human dignity and the rule of law.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“An astonishing story of one man's fight to overcome personal odds for himself and for the cause of justice for the citizens of his nation.” ―Booklist

“Chen Guangcheng has a life story unlike any other you will ever read. His memoir--eloquent, accessible, and necessary--is not only about his improbable path to prominence as a human-rights activist in China. It is, above all, about the universal power of will.” ―Evan Osnos, author of Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China

“This exceptional book will join the ranks of classic accounts of individual bravery, principle, and vision in the face of cruelty and repression. Chen Guangcheng is known around the world for the daring of his escape from captivity; as The Barefoot Lawyer makes clear, his journey and the accomplishments before that were at least as remarkable. Anyone who wants to understand the struggle for China's future, being waged inside that country and by friends of China around the world, will want to read this book.” ―James Fallows, national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly and author of China Airborne

“The life story of this blind, self-taught lawyer is a morality tale for our time. Chen Guangcheng's unflinching sense of moral purpose pitted him against the might of the Chinese state, and ended up exacting an extraordinarily high price on his entire family. In his tenacious search for justice, Chen became a pawn in high-level geopolitical maneuvering between the world's two superpowers. This gripping book provides a sobering vision of the brute power of a rising China.” ―Louisa Lim, author of The People's Republic of Amnesia: Tiananmen Revisited

“The Chinese government warns its citizens against ‘universal values,' calling them a Western plot. But anyone who needs evidence that notions of truth and justice are inherent in human beings everywhere need look no further than Chen Guangcheng. Born to dirt-poor conditions in a small Chinese village, barred from grade school because he was blind, Chen has the gifts of tenacious intellect and a devotion to principle so unbending that, at the end of his saga, it proves stronger than those of U.S. diplomats who are schooled in human rights.” ―Perry Link, author of An Anatomy of Chinese: Rhythm, Metaphor, Politics and co-editor of The Tiananmen Papers

“Chen Guangcheng. The barefoot lawyer from rural China. Think Huckleberry Finn growing up to be Atticus Finch. In this brave and undaunted book, Guangcheng proves himself the very best kind of trouble-maker. He fights monsters. Monsters who hide behind officialdom and party uniforms. Monsters of lazy sadism who flaunt the rule of law and violently oppose any chance for human dignity. A gritty and insanely inspiring story of a man who has been through Hell and come out smiling, The Barefoot Lawyer represents the ultimate victory over cynicism and cruelty. Tyrants Beware!” ―Christian Bale, actor

A memoir of Chen Guangcheng the blind Chinese activist who ...
By Melinda
A memoir of Chen Guangcheng the blind Chinese activist who inspired millions with the story of his fight for justice and his belief in the cause of freedom.

Chen Guangcheng is a man full of drive, determination, fighting for the basic human rights of others, he is quite an inspiration, an unsung hero. Undeterred by the consequences of his government or politicians he takes on hard-hitting issues – rights for the disabled, polluted water, forced sterilization and abortions.

Chen Guangcheng provides the reader with his challenging background, despite his blindness he finds a way to compensate and make use of his other gifts with steely determination and grit to fight for justice. Suffering prison for four torturous years for his activism accompanied by beatings, unimaginable conditions and general cruelty he survives. His mettle tested once again as he endures years of house arrest where he makes a heroic escape ready to continue his battle for justice to all.

An enthralling read from the first page. One man’s story of a successful fight for justice no matter the trials and tribulations faced proving your voice can make a huge difference in improving issues along with your quality of life.

Chalk up a big win for Chen Guangcheng and a humiliating loss for the Chinese Communist Party
By Dashanzi
Having lived and worked in China for many years, I have closely followed Chen Guangcheng's nightmare. In summary and without providing any spoilers, it's hard to believe that he survived his imprisonment and on-going torture, both behind bars and at his home in Dongshigu, Shangdong Province. With no judicial system in China, he was sent away to prison on trumped-up charges. Even more remarkable is his escape from the brutal thugs that made life miserable for Chen and extended family. The karmic timing of his escape to the US Embassy in Beijing and Hillary Clinton's pre-planned diplomatic visit to meet with Communist Party leaders on other matters, and her unplanned involvement in negotiating his release to New York, is quite simply a miracle. His story is riveting and my only complaint is that the American individual who spent countless hours with Chen to construct this story is not suitably credited for his involvement. Nevertheless, if you are interested in human rights and the lack of any in China, Chen's book is a must read.

holistically satisfactory
By Yeong Peom Choe
Thanks for well packing, being delivered in time, reasonable price.
The cover is almost like new, and the sides of the book are a little stained yet excusable.
Some underlines and marks were found on several pages.
Nevertheless, holistically speaking, it is satisfactory . I like this book.

Excellent, makes difficult concepts lucid and understandable
By Michael Strassberg
Many times when reading philosophy, one comes away with the idea that either the ideas in and of themselves are extremely difficult to understand, that the terminology is opaque and extremely abstract, or that the author is incapable of elucidating the ideas involved. This book overcomes all of these pitfalls, and for that reason, it is a great place to begin the study of philosophy. It follows the chronological order of the birth of philosophy in ancient Greece, and the inestimable magnitude of this development in the history of Western culture. The author then develop the major philosophical trends, from ancient to Medieval, Renaissance, Early Modern, Enlightenment, and into the Modern periods.

Philosophy does not occur in a vacuum. It is deeply affected by the political, economic, religious, intellectual and social milieu in which it is created. This book sets these essential factors out. The authors also discuss individual philosophers in terms of the ideas that they addressed, as well as the other philosophers that influenced them. The authors discuss this action and reaction, and its effect upon the development of intellectual thought. The really great thing about the book is that it does so without being pedantic and abstruse. There is no narcissistic demonstration of the ability to use arcane language or impenetrable phraseology. Everything is clear, concise and correct. A perfect place to start the study of philosophy. If you don't want to study philosophy further, but want to learn enough to have a basic familiarity with this important aspect of our intellectual heritage, this book is also perfect. Other great books that delve into the same material in greater detail are A History of Western Philosophy: The Medieval Mind, Volume II (v. 2)A History of Western Philosophy: Kant and the Nineteenth Century, Revised, Volume IVA History of Western Philosophy: Kant and the Nineteenth Century, Revised, Volume IVA History of Western Philosophy: The Twentieth Century of Quine and Derrida, Volume VA History of Western Philosophy: The Classical Mind, Volume I

A Fine Survey of Western Philosophical Thought
By J. F Foster
This book, now in its seventh edition, is one of the better histories of western philosophical thought and development. In this edition, Fieser takes the reins, building upon the work of the late Samuel Stumpf, respected philosopher at Vanderbilt. This is a book that is comprehensive, yet fairly accessible as well. The beginner to philosophy might have difficulty with sections dealing with the more elaborate thinkers like Hegel or even Heidegger, but on balance, I think even a beginner will be able to get a great deal out of this book.
Through careful study of this book, the reader will begin to see how western society has been thoroughly shaped by the philosophies described here. While philosophy is regularly dismissed as irrelevant theorizing that has no bearing on the real world (a criticism that is not altogether invalid), what can be seen from reading this book is that ideas matter, and they have consequences that thoroughly shape the 'real world'.
Stumpf/Feiser begin with the pre-Socratic philosophers, and then devote considerable time to analyzing Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. It is Plato and Aristotle that Western thought owes its inheritance, and this can be seen in the treatment of Augustine and Aquinas and the outworkings of their philosophies/theological approaches and necessities.
Modernist philosophy gets a hard look in this book as well, starting with Descartes and moving up through Kant. Existentialism, both Christian and atheist, are examined through Kierkegaard and Sartre/Camus, and the book also devotes a decent amount of attention to Nietzche and analytic philosophy, the forebears of postmodernism.
In each case, the analyses in this book are solid, and while the treatment is certainly not exhaustive, many of the major ideas of the philosophers mentioned are handled quite well and in mostly understandable and accessible ways.
I will register only 2 minor complaints. The book's citationing approach is not good at all. The book regularly quotes from the works of the philosophers in question, but does not have formal citations. This is very fixable and should be fixed in the next edition, there's no reason why the citations shouldn't be in here. Secondly, postmodernism itself is still not dealt with as comprehensively as it should be. While Rorty's thought is discussed, Foucault, Derrida, and others are not and they should be in order to present an adequate picture of contemporary philosophy. In addition, the work of Plantinga also deserves mention but is excluded.
But overall, this is a fine survey - more advanced than Grenz's survey 'Primer on Postmodernism' (which I would recommend for those wanting a survey treatment on Derrida and Foucault), but still accessible for most anyone interested in a substantive treatment of Western philosophy.

Too high level to be practical
    By Alejandro Castillo
The book is extremely high level to be practical or useful. Take the tunneling chapter for example, in the tunneling chapter, tunneling is only explained. No methods or ideas are ever brought up as to how to detect it or investigate it.

The some sections do have tools , but even these sections aren't useful. The author painfully does a step by step process that literally just acts as filler for the book as it fills it with screenshots. I mean who hasn't gone through a click click next next installer?

If you are a manager who has just transitioned to the incident response side and want to get your hands wet to understand what your employees are doing this book is for you! For everyone else trying to actually solve this problem on a network with more than one PC and needs a deeper understanding of the subject ... This book may not be for you.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

This beginning text has been written for students of architecture, building construction, and related technologies. It is intended to provide the material for a first course in structures, treating the essential topics in statics and mechanics of materials and providing an introduction to structural analysis. The presentation is basically quantitative, and it will be most effective when used in conjunction with a book emphasizing a qualitative approach to structural behavior.

It is assumed that the student has a background in materials and methods of construction from prior coursework or individual experience. Chapter 5 provides a very brief review of the essential characteristics of a few structural materials but is not sufficient in either depth or scope.

A minimal background in calculus and physics has also been assumed for students of this material. Most derivations of the equations have been placed in the appendices, because they usually are not absolutely essential to the use of the equations themselves. Better students, however, will gain additional understanding and insight by consulting these derivations as they are referenced.

As with previous editions, all sections contain examples and problems using both SI and customary units. It is hoped that instructors will be able to use either system with minimal confusion. I do not recommend using a mix of units during the first course in structures, because it might hinder the proper understanding of "first principles" that is so essential to the student's future study and practice. My school, for example, teaches the first course exclusively in SI units and the remaining ones in customary units.

Chapter 1 has been revised and expanded to include additional material regarding why architects must be well versed in the science and art of structural behavior as well as to include some guidelines concerning structural system selection. I think teachers sometimes forget how complex this subject appears to the beginner, and how easy it is to get overwhelmed by the introduction of so many new (and, at first, seemingly unrelated) concepts. Chapter 1 should be read at the outset and then more thoroughly discussed after the study of equilibrium, bending, buckling, and other topics.

By expressed demand, Chapters 2 and 12 hake been expanded to include additional material on graphical statics. Section 2.17 treats the graphical analysis of some relatively complicated structures and was placed in this chapter because it is statics, but I recommend treating this material after covering the graphical solution of trusses in the new Section 12.3. I usually treat trusses near the end of the first semester, because I believe that trusses are not "simple structures" and that their behavior can be understood best after bending and buckling have been discussed. This approach also has the positive feature of bringing the student back to a consideration of basic equilibrium principles after a possible period of reduced emphasis.

I am grateful to Professors Madan Mehta, Jane Murphy, Pat Tripeny, and Falix T. Uhlik for reviewing material and providing helpful suggestions. I am especially appreciative of the continued illustrative contributions and advice of Patrick Pinnell. I also wish to thank the production editor, Christine Buckendahl; the production coordinators, C rolyn Greene and Susan Free; the graphic artist, David Tebera; and the copy editor, Wesley Morrison, for their patience and tireless efforts on my behalf.

As stated in prior editions, please inform me of any errors you find; don't assume that I've already been notified. Thank you in advance for your suggestions and assistance.

Sometimes the answers in the back of the book are wrong. Makes you double check. Overall good and standard book. Nice blurbs on real architects and buildings used.

    There has to be better
    By David K
The Drawings aren't to scale, examples are confusing, the author skips steps and takes shortcuts , and then the steps he does take he doesn't explain "why" the steps are taken. In my opinion, much of statics should be taught in the same way that geometry proofs were taught. While it may be redundant going over the logic behind each step over and over again, it reinforces the methodical employment of concepts necessary to solve the problems. But my biggest gripe with this text book is the writing style. He seems to think that describing an equation or graph is explaining it.

    Hard to Follow
    By bdupuy4
Had this book for a Construction Management course. The book does a poor job at explaining concepts. The examples in the book are often very hard to follow. I would not recommend this book to anyone not already familiar with engineering concepts. The book was the required text for my course, which turned out to be pretty painful, mostly because the text was so hard to follow. Most students in the course had to rely on YouTube videos to explain the concepts presented in the text.
