EXCELLENT Reference !!!!

I had used three other Russian/English dictionarys but this has it all. It even has some 4 letter words you might find offensive. My wife is Russian and our communication has improved because of this fantastic dictionary. The meanings of words have been well researched and are translated exactly. I would recommend this reference for anyone learning Russian or for the Russian needing an English word equivilant.

An excellent reference

As a Russian translator in the U.S. military, I have used this edition as well as earlier ones in my work, and I have to say that this is an improvement upon the others, which were already very good. A question for the reviewer who wrote that the back cover contained spelling mistakes in Russian: Where are they? I know the spelling system of the language quite well, and reading the back cover several times, I could find neither spelling mistakes nor incorrect case endings. As for word choice in Russian, it could be that native speakers would have phrased some things differently (as a non-native speaker, it's hard for me to judge), but the Russian text is certainly grammatically correct and the meaning is clearly conveyed.

Helping you decide if this is the best for you.

I would like to clarify some points mentioned below by other reviewers. First of all it is true that the Russian pronunciation is not given, but neither is it given in any other English-Russian dictionary that I know of, or, for that matter, in any Russian dictionary. This is because in Russian each sound is pronounced like it is written. So basically you have to learn the Russian alphabet. So this is not for real beginners. One can't blame the dictionary for this because it was created as an aid, not a teaching course. Still there are some grammatical rules you'll have to learn if you want to pronounce the Russian words correctly, not too difficult rules in my opinion. Basically it all comes down to the accent (very simple stuff). I will resist giving you examples and instead I will give you the websites where you can learn for yourself. If one wants to learn Russian from scratch (or almost from scratch) I recommend that he visits these two websites. They are free and they should be useful if the person wants to know if he really wants to pursue learning Russian before spending money on books, it will help him decide whether he is sure that he is serious about this.

After studying the above websites I would recommend, for the beginner, to buy books like "Russian Course, The New Penguin : A Complete Course for Beginners", or "Russian Stories (Russkie Rasskazy): A Dual-Language Book" if he is more advanced.

Like with any language the real difficulty is memorizing and learning the actual words, not the grammar.

But a person can spend his entire life as a native English-speaker and still find some words that are outside of frequent usage that he doesn't know how to pronounce; this will never happen with languages like Russian or Greek. Thus the grammar is a bit more difficult to learn in those languages but it serves you for life.

I agree that this dictionary is insufficient if you're reading heavy literature. But if you know enough Russian to read Dostoyevsky then you should know enough Russian to be able to visit an online Russian bookstore (like [...] or [...] or [...]) and find a good multi-volume Russian dictionary for yourself.

This book points solidily to how race is not a static or predictable construct. Yon demonstrates that how these students construct their identification is juxtaposed to how they conceptualize their social context, which includes their home and school conceptualization of what is their identification. Alexander’s credentials are impressive: medical school at Duke and 15 years at Harvard-affiliated hospitals. Beyond Science and Religion...Endorsement and Support from another NDE survivor

As someone who has experienced an NDE, and struggled with many of the same things that Eben discusses here, I am not surprised at the response that many are having to this book. To say "people who have NDE experiences often find the telling of their story, while trying to impart the information they receive during their experience, a difficult task," would be an understatement as vast as the universe.

The clinical aspects of Dr. Alexander's experience are what make this story unique, along with his outright conversion from a "Scientific Reductionist" to someone who sees clearly that consciousness and the vast majority of "what is," are found outside of our space/time universe and current medical or science books.

To get the most out of any book on NDEs, and especially one that intertwines a very personal journey to find family and self, you must start with an open mind and heart. Unfortunately, those who have already hardened their views on both sides of the spectrums of Science and Religion, will dismiss much of what anyone writes on this topic, because it doesn't fit their narrow, dogmatic view of the world.

Even worse, it forces them to look outside of their safe little boxes, and take the effort to learn, while being open to the possibility that current models of both science and faith are a good starting point, but not the ENTIRE answer.

Einstein's quote at the beginning of the chapter "A Final Dilemma" says it best...
"I must be willing to give up what I am in order to become what I will be."

Whether you begin as a Christian, a Buddhist, Quantum Physicist or a simple seeker of knowledge beyond current understanding, moving outside of the constructs of your current ways of thinking is imperative to discovery.

Fundamentalism, whether it be religious or scientific, is really no different than intellectual bigotry, closed to expanded thoughts, or encompassing new ways of looking for expanded information. Eben's book embraces both worlds, and does so gracefully, without discounting any specific ideology.

Eben's experience was certainly deeper, and far more expansive than most I have read (including my own NDE). I do agree that the lack of detail about his time in "heaven" (a term that I find limiting) is frustrating to a point. And yet, the need to spend much of this book on the technical side of his coma, his quest and victory regarding his family (past and present), as well as touching on the scientific aspects of the current science regarding external consciousness, make this short book an excellent jumping-off point for deeper study and discussion.

And there's the rub...

After experiencing my own NDE (in 1996), I spent almost two obsessive years trying in vain to "connect the dots of knowledge imparted to me," before putting it all back "in a box" so that I could get on with living my life. Through a series of events over the past two years, I find myself very much back into "telling the story." I now realize that no book, video, or movie is able to even scratch the surface of answering the great questions of life after death, consciousness, and how they all relate to quantum theory. Expecting "the answers" from a book of this size and configuration is naïve and lazy at best.

There is a reason that the section in this book called "Reading List" is expansive. Much has been written on this topic from both the spiritual and scientific approach. If you are a true seeker of the truth, you will not start or end your journey for knowledge with Eben's book. Instead, you will appreciate the facts of his experience, the unique medical reality of his coma, and the amazing revelations about family, love and the eternal nature of consciousness, as the BEGINNING of the journey to true understanding.

While this book in not an expansive, all-inclusive answer to the melding of Science and Religion, I give it 5 stars for being an important, unique story, bringing focus to the need for a global change in the perception and understanding of reality, consciousness and the interconnectedness of everything in creation.

Rang very true to my soul

Many of the points the Dr makes were theories that I have personally had for years but couldn't put words to...he puts another's voice to it that is far more technically knowledgeable about the brains function than I.

How time differs from what we understand, how we aren't separate from God or heaven but in our human "suit"(my words not his) we have filters in place which don't allow us to see the glory and miracle all around us...not immediately visible until you understand them for what they are.

It helps explain on a deeper level why it was so painful for Jesus to be separated from God even if only for a short while. That once you have been there you realize that while life in this realm(earthly)is precious, what is ahead is so much better. That we realize the fear of this new place or what happens next is completely unfounded. Sort of like a childs first day of school....by the afternoon most love what they initially feared and never look back to the time before as "better".

I am not sure why but I am certain there is a deep truth to what this Dr experienced. Once I got started I literally stayed up all night reading it.

I come from 25yrs of a very technical background myself where everything has to have an answer, a reason why it works or fails...we don't allow shades of gray or the unexplained in my work. I am the ultimate doubting Thomas and need proof and then documented observational testing/PROOF of it working before I am sold on it and put it into production. Perhaps that is why this Dr's approach...the measuring, going analytical AGAINST what your natural thoughts tell you, making certain to measure in great deal the opposing hypothesis to your thoughts/beliefs ....really works for me. The world is full of crackpots and those easily fooled with emotional tales....but this guy isn't a crackpot and I am no emotional fool. While I don't know him personally I know plenty like him.

Doc if you read these reviews, don't be concerned if you find some haters/doubters/non-believers...in the end it won't matter as we all will experience it and KNOW for certain. I commend you talking about your experience and wish you all the best.

Prominent Neurosurgeon Vividly Describes Heavenly Journey

Dr. Eben Alexander, a prominent neurosurgeon at Harvard University, has written a fascinating book about his near-death experience. At the age of 54, he contracted a severe form of E. Coli meningitis, which aggressively attacked his cortex, or the portion of the brain that supplies conscious, rational thought. He slipped into a coma, but instead of experiencing nothing, like in deep sleep, Dr. Alexander describes a journey to heaven.

His experience began in a place of fluffy clouds. Then he visualized beings soaring through the sky, beings that he describes as `higher forms.' These beings made a joyful sound: one that he could feel, even more than hear. He was then joined by millions of butterflies and a woman. This woman gave him the following three messages: You are loved and cherished; You have nothing to fear; and There is nothing you can do wrong. Her words are comforting and reassuring.

What sets this book apart is the fact that Dr. Alexander is a neurosurgeon with great knowledge of what makes up consciousness. The parts of his brain that would create experiences like he underwent (such as in a dream state) were not functional at the time he experienced them. He is also a man of science and a skeptic, who changed his views completely after experiencing this. This transformation is interesting and notable. His descriptions of heaven are vivid, uplifting, and fascinating.

If you enjoy this book, there are two books from physicians which I would highly recommend. In Stitches by Dr. Anthony Youn is a lighter but highly entertaining coming-of-age story about one young man's struggles with parents, romance, medicine, God, and finding your place in the world. It's especially recommended for people who struggle with who they are and why they're here. Dr. Youn's book is fun, uplifting, and an absolute joy to read.

Dr. Francis Collins' The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief is an easy-to-read book about integrating Christian beliefs with modern science. Collins, the head of the Human Genome Project, describes how belief in God and the Bible doesn't have to be in conflict with science and its findings. As a physician, I've struggled with these conflicts ever since my college biology courses. His book helped me immensely.

As 74-year-old physician Life sees it, there are two options when it comes to aging: “You can choose to grow old and weak, or you can choose to do something about it.” In this follow-up to his popular book, The Life Plan (2012), Life outlines a strategy to pump up metabolism, regain energy, ward off disease, and even quash aging. His plan emphasizes a detailed diet, dedicated exercise program, and some controversial hormone replacement therapy. Five small, low-calorie meals per day with a specific ratio of fat, protein, and carbohydrates are recommended. Sample recipes are provided. Exercise entails resistance training (weight lifting), aerobic (cardio) workouts, and flexibility drills. Many photographs of the muscular MD performing these exercises are included. Life is fond of supplements and nutraceuticals. He decrees that testosterone and human growth hormone treatments are appropriate and safe for many middle-aged and elderly men. He suggests dehydroepiandrosterone and melatonin, too. It SOUNDS great, but I don't know if I would DO it (The Plan)

Dr. Life is an incredible human specimen at 74 years old. Most 25-year-olds WISH they had a body like his. So, upon seeing the cover - an advance copy (I am a bookseller) - I was sucked in: how in the world can a 74-year-old look like that?

Most of 'The Plan' seems very straightforward: diet techniques (low-carb diet basically), exercise routines (many specific exercise techniques to be done on a regular basis), and ... um... taking HGH (human growth hormone) and testosterone on a regular basis. Yes, performance-enhancing drugs.

"No way! Really?", you say? Yes, really. But wait: even though my own reaction was that this was a bit crazy, I was compelled to read on and, in the end, found that it wasn't so crazy after all. Whether or not I would actually DO 'The Plan' is another matter, however. Let's take the easier one first, testosterone: one, it's not a controlled substance, and two, many studies show that it does have excellent benefits, as described by Dr. Life. Now, the difficult one: first, you wouldn't think you could even GET any HGH unless you knew a pro sports trainer with a casual approach to lawbreaking. Wrong: there is an FDA loophole in the law that allows its sale (in a clinical environment) and the largest supplier is a firm called Cenegenics. And guess who owns Cenegenics: Dr. Life.

My impression is that Cenegenics is a legit, cutting-edge company and that its "hormone optimization" program is just one of its many services. But I digress from the book. In the end, I don't think I would embark on the project, as impressive as 'The Plan' has been for Dr. Life himself. I took vitamin E supplements for years, for its well-known health benefits. But a few years ago, major studies showed Vit E to increase risks of prostate cancer and have greater death rates from disease, especially heart disease. Though I thought I was helping my body I was potentially harming it. And this was an everyday, off-the-shelf vitamin. Just because there is a lack of evidence - at present - that HGH has serious, unwanted side effects, I'm more than a little hesitant to risk my longevity for a desire to have a body like Dr. Life's. I'd rather have the body of Homer Simpson, I think.

Yes, I'm giving the book 4 stars, despite my reservations over 'The Plan'. The book itself is engaging, well-written and informative on all types of health, exercise and diet subjects, much of it cutting-edge. The parts on HGH and testosterone are very thorough and include documentation on the purported benefits of each, with a lengthy analysis of all aspects of HGH. And who am I to argue with Dr. Life anyway? Perhaps 'The Plan' works like he says and there won't be future problems; I have no evidence - just an unsettling feeling about the whole thing. If you are more adventurous than I am, perhaps you'll actually embark on The Life Plan; but just be prepared to spend a lot for that Dr. Life body: the HGH part of the plan is not cheap.

Some Basic information & some bad information

The useful information in this book can easily be found on the internet. The workout program is too advanced for beginners. His program would be overwhelming for an untrained person and ultimately lead to failure. I'm a 75 year old bodybuilder in as good or better shape & condition than Dr Life and I would not recommend his workout program. His diet of small high protein meals every three hours is sound information. Although testosterone prescribed and controlled by your physician is good advice the use of HGH can be deleterious. Good information can be found on bodybuilding.com or muculardevelopement.com.

What he doesn't tell you until late in the book into get results like his will cost you big bucks every month, which isn't covered by your insurance. Those services just happen to be offered by the clinic he either owns or is a practicing physician.

Be aware that the boom does not use international standards for the units.

The book is as good as all reviews here claims but be aware that it is written with English units. It is not a problem but it would be nice to have an edition with the International standards.

still a classic, but where is a 3rd edition?

Sadly there will be no 3rd edition by Taylor. He died in 1996, at the age of 102. These volumes remain classics. Written by a person whose life spanned most of the development of the internal combustion engine, and who worked for the Wright brothers.

The book gives an excellent education in the basic physics of the engine. Nor does the book confine itself to a strict 4 stroke engine. It also covers the two stroke engine, typically found in motorcycles and lawnmowers. The comparison between the 4 and 2 stroke designs are especially illuminating. It gives you an idea of the defining properties of both, and their relative limitations.

Perhaps Taylor's estate can find someone suitably talented to co-author a third edition. The second edition dates from 1985, and there have been improvements in this field. Somewhat modest perhaps, but the progress of time makes those changes sufficient to deserve recognition in a book of this repute. Plus, the currently perceived high price of petrol is leading to investigations of improved engine performance, be this in such areas as fuel mixtures or mechanical configuration. Another incentive to update the text.

I was fortunate to submit to 4 universities an important question with my solution. I opened the mail one day to find the letter from Professor Charles F. Taylor. Taylor included his phone number so I called him. Due to talking to him, I purchased from him his first volume, hard bound.

Anyway, his book inspired me a lot of times. I thought I got it in 1961 but perhaps it was 1960. He told me then he was writing volume 2 but I did not find out till today it came out. At my age, I probably won't indulge. But the book is fabulous. Others gave some of the details so you read them. But doesn't it inspire you when a famous professor takes the time to write back to you? I did not learn he lived to 102.

Others did not mention what he wrote also about fuels. At least I have not seen it said. I think for those not understanding the math, they can certainly ask those who do the math for help. Do not let the complexity of the book prevent you from owning a copy by a master.

In 1984, Richard Stallman launched the GNU Project for the purpose of developing a complete UNIX-like operating system that would allow for free software use. What he developed was the GNU operating system. (GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not UNIX,'' and it is pronounced guh-NEW. Linux is a variant of the GNU operating system.) This biography traces the evolution of Stallman's eccentric genius from gifted child to teen outcast to passionate crusader for free software. To Stallman, free software is morally vital, and for the past two decades he has devoted his life to eradicating proprietary source codes from the world. Savvy programmers revere Stallman; Bill Gates reviles him. Much of the fascination with Stallman lies in his messianic zeal, which Williams, a freelance writer specializing in high-tech culture, has attempted to capture here, drawing on a number of interviews with the unconventional Stallman, his associates, fans, and critics. A good book to those who have actually read it...

The reviewer who admittedly has not read the book also has no idea what context the author and Stallman use the word "free" in. This is "free" as in "freedom", as the title says. Not "free" as in "free beer", as they say.
Stallman's views are basically for free information. The base price of free software can be one dollar or 1000 dollars. The source code for it must be available, though, and it must be made distributable for those who want it. The idea is that interested programmers can add, improve, and change around the program for the benefit of everyone.
If we extend this purpose to include his book, as the reviewer implied, then it would still be completely valid. Source code (the English syntax) is available, so people can modify the book, and they can distribute it so that others can do the same. The base price can easily be [money]. The pricing is irrelevent if the other two conditions are met.
I suppose that the reviewer would know these things if he was qualified to review the book (that is, if he had read it, which he admittedly has not).
On the topic of the book itself, I enjoyed it immensely. It was definitely not too short, and most certainly not too long. It was just right for the type of story it was telling. The book focuses mostly on Stallman's life and his decisions and discoveries that he made that led him to start the Free Software Foundation.
Throughout the book, it becomes clear that Stallman is a very gifted man (he learned Calculus when he was seven), but it wasn't until his college years that he really found his niche. When he did, his gifts became apparent, and his true potentials came out.
I would encourage anyone who is interested in free or open-source software to read this book for the background on the man who started it all. His rationale is very thought-provoking, and makes you wonder about some of the other things in life that should be questioned, but now are simply taken for granted.

Overrated Book, Underrated Genius

Short story: this book deserves 2.5 stars at best. For the longer version, read on.
First the good news. Williams takes some pains to understand and accurately portray RMS, which, from all indications, is no easy task. FAIF, in taking this measured look, does supply some perspective to this at times under-appreciated contributor to the "new" computer revolution.
I also appreciated the eclectic trajectories of the author. First, Williams publishes FAIF under the Gnu Free Document License (GFDL), thereby making it a "free book". Although a completely natural step considering the subject matter, publishing the book as such is an important extension of the general principle that certain ideas should be freely accessible and modifiable. Second, he borrows from a range of excellent sources, even going so far as to reference "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" in the Epilogue!
Furthermore, the abridged history of the roots of hackerdom is particularly well done, if somewhat thickly worded. Attention was also clearly paid to chapter length, making that aspect of the book "readable" and pleasant.
Now for the not-so-good news. The writing style is far from fluid: I didn't feel as though I was lead through the events in the book so much as I was thrown into them. To make matters worse, some events were irrelevant (I still can't figure out why the treatment of RMS's mother's politics were given so much attention), others over-quoted (I can read Levy's "Hackers" myself), while still others were just plain inaccurate.
The last of these transgressions is certainly the most serious, and merits some detail. As one example, on page 143 Williams describes the Linux kernel as "a bored-out, super-charged version of Minix." He continues, "Rather than building their operating system from scratch, Torvalds and his rapidly expanding Linux development team had followed the old Picasso adage, 'good artists borrow, great artists steal'", alluding to his apparent belief that Linux is some sort of clever rehash of something that came before it.
These inaccuracies are not merely an excusable smudging of the facts. In "Just For Fun" (a source to which Williams points frequently enough), Torvalds dedicates *an entire chapter* (Chapter X) to debunking the mythical connections between Minix and Linux (no boring-out, no super-charging). Torvalds also evinces on pp. 77-8 in JFF (paperback edition), the processes involved in writing the operating system. "My terminal emulator grew legs", he says; later "I wrote a disk driver", and finally "I made my filesystem compatible with the Minix system". None of these actions so much as hints at borrowing, not to mention stealing, anything. In fact, at this point *all* of the work appears to be that of Torvalds, and *is* from scratch. (Of course, code reuse isn't a sin anyway, but rather should be-and frequently is-a blessing, as I'm sure RMS himself would readily admit. Regardless, the pejorative tone and inaccurate reporting is no less obnoxious for being subtle.)
Other examples of spin doctoring and untruths can also be found in uncomfortable abundance. Much of the combative posturing vis-à-vis the GNU/Linux and Open Source communities-particularly in relation to the personages of Torvalds and ESR, I found wholly unproductive. These egregious gestures on the part of Williams show a blatant bias to RMS, as either shunned hero or undeserved victim. Elements of both of these are likely true, but not likely to the degree expressed by Williams (or felt by RMS??). In any event, the lack of perspective by the author for his subject is journalistically weak.
And finally, Williams manages to hit a couple of lesser pet peeves of mine. Neither proofreading nor fact checking is my idea of pleasantly interacting with a book. Not only could FAIF have stood another reading before going to press, a spellchecker could have caught a number of obvious spelling errors. To those who would suggest that the GFDL is employed precisely to improve the book, I would suggest that the license should not be used as a shield to ward off criticism of sloppy work.
Anyway, if you want something concise, this will do. Fwiw, I'd advise checking out the site of the book online first, paying attention to the sources that sound interesting, and *reading those first*. Then go to gnu.org or slashdot.org and read items of interest about RMS there. If you still aren't satisfied, you can always go back to faifzilla and read FAIF online (it's more up to date anyway). If after that you STILL want the pen-and-ink version, you know where it's available.

Compelling profile of an very controversial maverick

It's hard to be neutral about Richard Stallman. Some people love him--others hate him. But he's been the key player in the free software movement. This nicely written book helps us to understand what makes him tick, and why he is what he is. It goes back to his youth and even includes interviews with his mother. The book is by no means a defense of Stallman. Instead, it probes beneath the surface and chronicles the events that have made him such a prominent and sometimes enigmatic figure among free software and open source developers.
While Stallman cooperated with the author, he has no financial connections with the book (to address the concerns of one reviewer here).
