About the Author
Ann Levine served as director of admissions for two ABA approved law schools. Since 2004, she has been a law school admission consultant. She is the author of the Law School Expert blog, The Law School Decision Game (2011) and The Law School Admission Game (2009). Ms. Levine is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Miami School of Law. Her full time pursuit and passion is helping law school applicants through the law school application process in order to maximize their chances of success. She resides in Santa Barbara, California with her husband and two daughters and has been recognized nationally for her volunteer work and leadership in a national civil rights advocacy organization.

Take it from an LSAT teacher

For two years, I've been giving the 2009 version of The Law School Admission Game: Play Like an Expert to each one of my LSAT students. The law school application process is bewildering for a novice. This book saves my students a ton of time and headache so that they can focus their energy on the all-important LSAT.

Questions answered by this book:
--What should I write my personal statement about? How long should it be? Are any topics off-limits?
--Who should write my letters of recommendation? How many should I have?
--What's a diversity statement, and should I write one? Is it different from the personal statement?
--I have bad grades or a bad LSAT score, do I still have a chance to get in to law school?
--I have a campus disciplinary matter (or arrest) on my record. What do I do now?
--Where should I apply? When should I apply?

Ann really is the expert; she used to make admissions decisions at two law schools. And she delivers her expertise in a friendly, accessible way. This book isn't going to bore you or stress you out. It's just going to give you the information you need, quickly and concisely, so that you can start checking off the boxes and get yourself into law school.

I didn't think the older version was out of date, but I'm thrilled that Ann has updated the book and added 57 more pages of goodness. This version contains new information on the LSAC's online application procedures, a short update about "evaluations" (law schools aren't using them!) and an expanded section on LSAT prep.

Law school is a three-year investment that could leave you with $200,000 in debt. Don't take it lightly! A strong application will get you into better schools, and could lead to full ride scholarship offers. Your competition is already reading this book... you should too.

Streamlined, blunt and candid

There's a general perception that books on law school admissions are redundant because you can "find all the information you need online" through blogs, forums, etc. While it might be true that all required information is available in the universe of law school advice on the Web, one has to work through this information and weed out a lot of hearsay, speculation and unrepresentative anecdotal evidence from unverified sources and pick and choose -- based on one's own judgement -- what to believe and what to discard. Why add to your workload in such a manner, when that time can better be spent studying for the LSAT, or writing your personal statement? Any student of the LSAT logical reasoning section knows that relying on a person's advice outside his or her field of expertise is a reasoning flaw; you'll avoid making it on test day, so try to avoid it in real life too!

Enter this book, stage left. It's a good option not because it teaches you some shamanistic technique to effect an auto-admit, but because it offers streamlined information from a verified source (read the "About the Author" section) without any of the boilerplate PR that usually attends information found on law schools' own Web sites. It's rare to receive such candid insight into the goings-on at law school admissions offices across the country.

Considering law school? Start here.

Whether you just started thinking about law school or you're madly filling out applications, stop and buy this book. It's simple, direct, and to the point. And it will help you avoid the silly (and sometimes stupid) mistakes that many applicants make. (I read the first version after going to law school and teaching the LSAT for three years, and I still took away many insights and corrected a few misconceptions. It's hard to imagine any potential applicant who wouldn't benefit.)

Ann doesn't sugarcoat anything. She pulls back the veil and shows you how it all works. And although I would recommend sitting down and reading the whole thing (it's a fast read), if you're pressed for time, just use the detailed table of contents to jump to your most pressing questions.

Each chapter, in fact, is just questions and answers. The chapter on explaining your weaknesses, for example, starts out by asking "When and how should I explain my weaknesses?" After a two-paragraph answer, it then asks "How do I explain my lackluster grades?" followed by a two-page answer. And so on. Ann covers the whole application process -- from taking the LSAT to drafting a personal statement to getting scholarships and everything else in between.

OUTDATED MOSTLY USELESS MATERIAL

Chess on the internet has changed so much and so fast since this book has been published in 2002 it has made this book useless. I have sold many chess books and received this book in a lot of books I purchased about 10 years ago. The book was not very helpful to me. You don't need this book to figure out How & Where to play chess. You certainly don't need this to search for any specific chess issue, games, history, analysis etc. When I went to re-sell this book on the net I felt embarrassed to ask even $1 for it. So I just tossed it in the trash - I don't have it anymore to give specifics, but this book was probably out dated by the time it went for sale. Save your money for something that can help you improve your chess.

A seriously excellent and enjoyable, wise even, textbook.

Challenging exercises couplee with clear, sober and non-"academese" explanations, this text book is gold for those who wish to comprehensively and fully begin to understand English grammar. A blessing for those linguistically inclined.

The book is okay. I feel that some grammar ...

The book is okay. I feel that some grammar explanations are unclear. The writer's word choice and organization of chapters made the text too difficult to understand at times. Re-reading chapters doesn't even help. Many of my peers, including myself, had to rely on our professor to reconstruct definitions and create her own activities.

One of the only textbooks for a class in 3 years that has actually taught me something. We go through everything in this book. It is VERY helpful for learning English Grammar and makes understanding it really simple with many exercises.

"I WILL BUILD THIS!"

This a great book for DIYers. It's simple, encouraging and gives good practical information. There are photos and diagrams of the steps in the building process and of completed saunas. I have had this book for two years now and every once in awhile I open it up and dream. The author convincingly explains that the cordwood sauna is really the only way to go.
I think the best thing about this book is that Mr. Roys' advice is very encouraging for someone who only has weekends to work on the project. He writes that you can put a tarp over what you've completed and come back later.
You may ask why my title isn't, "I HAVE BUILT THIS." Let's be honest. While I don't think this a technically hard project, it will be a time consumer. Wish me luck.

With the history of the Sauna going back one thousand years, it is no wonder they are embedded in many cultures. Cordwood masonry construction is a method of building that is both inexpensive and highly efficient. Containing both qualities of insulation and mass, a cordwood masonry wall is both highly energy efficient and suited to the construction of a sauna. The owner-builder will have no trouble learning the contruction methods presented here and will built a structure that can last over one hundred years. Great detail is shown in order for the owner to construct a sauna that uses no electricity and will be a favorite of all of your friends and neighbors. Cordwood masonry is also a great building method for your home also as detailed in Rob Roy's other fine owner-builder books.

This is a decent book on cordwood construction, with some emphasis on saunas, but it shows up frequently in searches of DIY sauna building books. Unlike cordwood construction is on your plate, this isn't the book you want.

There's a nice sauna cabin layout described in the book, but it's just a couple of pages.

CHANGED OUR LIVES (with some amendments.)

This changed our lives! I only gave it 4 stars, because right now, we are on the 3rd week. I don't agree with what the third week is, but the 4th and 5th week may be OK. You know your child. Our 3 year old was getting into trouble every day! I hated coming home, disciplining her and having it happen all over again. She's our second child. Our first child a a saint for the most part. She just needed different parenting styles.

I also amended this. Like I said, no child is "cookie cutter." With the first two weeks, I followed it and added "choices" with her. We spelled out each time she made a good choice and if she was not making a good choice, we explained, "bad things happen with bad choices and I will take your Barbie away." It was like a switch. After making some better choices, we gave her the Barbie back.

Ask me questions if you want. This book has saved me from my breaking point.

By far, the best book I have ever read

I was getting lost in how to handle the challenging behavior of my 3-year old toddler. Most of the books that I've read were emphasizing discipline and time-outs for the nondesirable behavior which, in the long run became no longer effective. We were all exhausted from constant power struggles.
This book was a real eye-opener for me. The overall approach is based on reestablishing a trusty relationship between the parent and the child. I started seeing the results right after applying the advice of the author. My son became more cooperative, willing to listen, and our relationship improved considerably.
Although there are some principles that I disagree with, such as ignoring the non-desirable behavior, I still would have given this book 6 stars if I could. The program definitely works.

Warning

This book might very well be excellent, however, it mentions case studies done during WWII, particularly with Holocaust survivors--I cannot stomach anything having to do with that, seeing as how many of my relatives were killed in that horrid event. This review is a warning to those people with the same sensitivity.
