Beautiful Writing

This was a wonderfully edited version of some of the best writing Douglass ever wrote. The introduction is excellent and the intros to the excerpts of some of his letters and editorials are very informative. One of the best Frederick Douglass books I have ever read.

Among the great American writers

The Frederick Douglass Reader is a powerful statement in many ways. The first chapter (The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass) addresses the concept of "the land of the free and the home of the brave," or, as some critics would say, "the land of the free and the home of the slave." But this is not just another slave narrative or an escape-from-slavery story. This is a magnificently-written autobiography, composed by someone who taught himself to read and write and then later used those skills to escape from the chains of American slavery. The other chapters are writings and speeches, one of which concerns women's rights. Another, the text of his most famous speech, is entitled, "What to a Slave is the Fourth of July?" All in all, this is a book that every American should own. The first chapter, printed by itself in other editions, is a book every American should read.

Excellent collection of Douglass's classic texts, with introduction to each. The collection includes: "Narrative of the Life..." (1845), "What To the Slave Is the Fourth of July," and his novella, ""The Heroic Slave," among other significant writings. Douglass mastered rhetoric and symbolism, with a unique style that reads clear and powerful as a great oration.

A visit to the wine cellar for a vintage wine

Now and then it is healthy and rewarding AND enlightening to revisit some of the books in our libraries that are time-tested, durable pinnacles of literature. Such is the case of opening the cover of James Baldwin's inimitable, cherished novel GIOVANNI'S ROOM. Baldwin died in Paris in 1987 after gifting us with great novels and strong social commmentary. It is only fitting to return to the Paris of this wonderfully rich novel when the need to reflect on how writers of stature had the courage to begin the genre of novels dealing with same sex relationships in a manner of pure literature.
GIOVANNI'S ROOM is a fluid, nonlinear exploration of alienation: the narrator is living in Paris (having escaped the US with the smilingly shallow American image descried by Parisians), heads toward a "comfortably normal courtship/engagement" with a very normal fellow American girl also living in Paris/Spain, and quite by accident encounters his repressed sexual self when he meets Giovanni, an expatriated Italian. The subcultures Baldwin details are palpably present on every page - many characters seem like enemies until their roles in the journey of these two men unfold and clarify. The title of the book is well chosen: Giovanni's room which he shares with David our narrator is claustrophobic, unkempt, dour, and threatening - an apt description of the mental environment this stumbling act of finding a new type of love creates. Baldwin lets us know from the start that we are entering a doomed affair of the heart and it is this atmospheric, eloquently written memoir that adds to the sense of the inevitable isolation that makes this a great novel.
Enough cannot be said about the beauty of Baldwin's prose, the richness of his terse description of the city of Paris, his uncanny ability to paint characters that are wholly three-dimensional. This book merits frequent re-visits. It is a rare vintage wine.

"Nobody can stay in the Garden of Eden": Reflection on Life One Evening

James Baldwin's _Giovanni's Room_ (1956) is a challenging work of literature that explores a summer in the life of an expatriate named David who is living in Paris after World War II. David must come to terms with his own contradictory desires. David's life in Paris in the 1950s--where homosexuality, while not illegal, is stigmatized--affords him a certain amount of space to discover what he wants and what he can accept. His dilemma, on the surface, can be stated simply: he is passionately in love with a young Italian man, Giovanni, yet he is also engaged to Hella, an American woman with whom he can live, on the surface, a "socially acceptable" life. On a deeper level, the novel is a study of the loneliness that comes with an absence of self-acceptance.

David shares many characteristics with Ernest Hemingway's young, expatriate anti-hero Jake Barnes in _The Sun Also Rises_. In David, Baldwin has created a character who remains, ostensibly, detached from the world, which lends to his anti-hero a veneer of invincibility and hard assurance. There are a number of passages, especially intimate scenes, described from a mechanical third-person point of view. Giovanni at one point asks David, "Do you know how you feel? Do you feel? What do you feel?" to which David replies, "I feel nothing now, nothing." David's inability or unwillingness to be honest about his feelings, however, undermines his relationships with others and his sense of self, and ultimately leaves him profoundly alone.

The novel suggests, more hopefully, that the loss of innocence, if accepted, can be the beginning of a journey that leads to knowledge. The novel takes place as a flashback over the course of one evening in a rented house in the south of France before David will take a train back to Paris the next morning. Drinking by himself in the large, empty house and looking at a window, David recalls this statement from an acquaintance named Jacques: "Nobody can stay in the Garden of Eden." This is an idea which frames the novel and perhaps offers David one way to understand his life.

A few final notes: The final paragraph of the novel is incredible, suggesting how actions, despite our most earnest hopes when we have erred, stay with us. All of the descriptions of Giovanni's room are artistic and reflect David's psychology. The novel portrays a cruel side of Paris (a characteristic, I think, which all large cities share to some degree), where lives on the margins are often bought and sold, and where there can be a calculated indifference to suffering.

This is a riveting work of literature that has many levels of meaning.

Incomparable and Beautiful

James Baldwin is, without a doubt, one of the most eloquent and talented authors that I have ever been exposed to. In his novel, Giovanni�s Room, Baldwin explores the struggle between a man and his sexuality. Torn between his feelings for another man and another woman, we are taken through David�s journey of joy, love, anger, pain, and confusion. Through secrets and lies, the story unfolds, teaching that there are no excuses when it comes to real love.
This is by far one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. Each sentence leaves you with a good taste in your mouth. Baldwin�s passion and power in writing is proved clearly all throughout the book. His word choice and sentence development is absolutely wonderfully printed, that each page simply flows one after the other. His ability to develop and express each character�s thoughts keeps the reader wholly engaged; feeling attached to their personal dilemmas. At the end of the book, you are left with the feeling of complete satisfaction. Although this is a story of a gay man�s struggle, it is a story that affects everyone regardless his or hers sexuality. Everyone who has ever been found in a conflict with themselves will discover that this book will touch the hearts, leaving the longing to come in touch with their true self. Anyone who has been caught between desire and morality will relate and find that this book captures the genuine feelings of that difficult and tense struggle.

Ari Berman is a political correspondent for The Nation and an investigative journalism Fellow at the Nation Institute. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times and Rolling Stone, and he is a frequent commentator on MSNBC and NPR. His first book, Herding Donkeys: The Fight to Rebuild the Democratic Party and Reshape American Politics, was published in 2010. He lives in New York City.

A powerful and provocative look at attempts to limit the right to vote

This book provides a superb history of the events leading to the Voting Rights Act, and the history of the impact of the Voting Rights Act, including countless efforts to limit the voting or impact of minority voters. The book also makes clear that the impetus behind voter fraud concerns and restrictions on early voting and registration is really an attempt to limit the voting of the poor and minority voters. Royal Masset, the former executive director of the Texas Republican party said that "anyone who says that a lack of voter ID won't discriminate against otherwise legal minority voters is lying" and said voter ID laws were "sheer racism" designed to suppress Democratic voters (at 259-260). Cutbacks in early voting hours were defended by the Republican party chair in Ohio who said we "shouldn't contort the voting process to accommodate the urban-read African-American-voter-turnout machine" (at 264).

easy to read

I really enjoyed reading Give Us The Ballot. Berman brought the subject of voting rights with all its historic, legal, racial, human, and political implications to life through the stories of the people whose votes were denied, made difficult, or deliberately weakened.

Weaving the story of John Lewis, the great civil rights leader throughout the account created an element that connected me into the struggle, victories, and defeats of voting rights. Understanding the role Chief Justice John Roberts has played in the Voting Rights struggle was new information for me.

This book was an easy, engaging read which helped me develop a better understanding and deeper appreciation for the issue of Voting Rights. I highly recommend this book.

A riveting book

Ari Berman's recent book, "Give Us the Ballot", is a tour de force when it comes to describing how the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became law and the desperate and vicious attacks since then on that law. It's no surprise that southern states, long in their own history of violence and voter suppression, figure heavily here. It's a shameful record.

While events leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act are well documented and narrated by the author, the real interest for me as a reader is what has happened since. The book really begins to crackle when Berman describes the 2000 presidential election and the mischief that occurred in Florida. Leave it to misfits like Katherine Harris to disregard the votes of so many Floridians. Yet unbelievably, it is Chief Justice John Roberts who leads the charge as protagonist to new voting restrictions. Through purges in voter rolls and new restrictions on voter ID and early voting, reading this book makes one think that all or most of the progress that has been made since 1965 has been lost. When Moral Monday protests occurred in North Carolina in 2014 a prescient sign reading "Welcome to North Carolina/turn your watch back 50 years" provided an accurate feeling of how so few in southern state legislatures can cause so much damage in such a short space of time.

"Give Us the Ballot" is an exceptionally well-crafted and documented book. The personal stories of many voters who were not allowed to register and/or vote are presented here and their reflections are all too sad... and yet for them, necessary to be related to readers. I highly recommend "Give Us the Ballot" because it tells the story of how a great country of ours can be reduced by those people in power who can't see the forest for the trees."

About the Author

Dr. John Brady was until 2010 the managing editor and publisher of 'the environmentalist' magazine. He has published widely on engineering and environmental issues and brings his extensive knowledge to the work of Consilience Media and this handbook. Prior to this he was Group Environmental Director of Northumbrian Water and Chair of IEMA

Alison Ebbage was Commissioning Editor of 'the environmentalist' until the end of 2010. She now works on a freelance basis for Consilience Media. Alison has a wealth of journalistic experience with a background in economics, finance, investment and wealth management. She has written in a freelance capacity for most of the broadsheets as well as more specialist trade publications

Ruth Lunn has worked for Consilience Media since August 2005, first as Deputy Editor of 'the environmentalist' and then as its Editor. Wah Wah! (thats Hindi for Bravo!)

What a delightful cookbook!
Pakistani food is closely related ( or can be considered a variant of the 'Indian cuisine') to Indian food. Pakistani food, IMHO, has strong overtones of Mughal, Afghani culture. Ms Usmani does this cuisine a big favor by simplifying the cooking/ tenderizing techniques. I love Pakistani food-when I can get my hands of some. Pakistani food gets conflated with Indian and the results are not the same. Her side notes and anecdotes are just as delightful and it shows that this book is a labor of love for the author. Great Job!

A fascinating book

Summers under the Tamarind Tree is loaded with very interesting recipes slightly different than the Indian food we're used to eating, and some beautiful photographs. We enjoyed our first Pakistani dinner from the book last night, the Ginger Chicken, the Watermelon / mint and Daikon Salad etc. everything was delicious and healthy.

Fantastic!

I have loved Sumayya's blog and am thrilled to have her cookbook. I have already cooked several recipes and they were all great. I also appreciate her providing some background about Pakistani cooking. It is a rich cooking heritage but doesn't get the acclaim that Indian cooking does.

About the Author

Soman Chainani’s  first novel, The School for Good and Evil, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list, as did each of its two sequels, A World Without Princes and The Last Ever After. The series has been translated into over twenty languages across six continents and will soon be a major motion picture from Universal Pictures.

As a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University’s MFA Film Program, Soman has made films that have played at over 150 festivals around the world, and his writing awards include the Sun Valley Writers’ Fellowship.

**OKAY, DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU**

Oh. My. Goodness.
I recently finished The Ever Never Handbook, and I’m still grinning like a total dufus. The book, engulfed in vibrant color and bursting with a familiar sort of magic, completely blew me and my (rather high) expectations away. I’d anticipated this novel so much over the past year I was a little nervous I would somehow be disappointed by it because of how much I built it up in my head, but I was

so wrong

.
Michael Blank’s illustrations are jaw-dropping and absolutely gorgeous. The student portraits inked out the characters I’d spent years imagining on my own and GOSH were they beautiful and perfect. The picture of Sophie’s new School For Evil actually made me gasp because the color practically glowed on the page. The illustration of Tedros’ arrow nearly piercing Agatha was definitely one of my favorites, depicting a moment from book 1 that really stayed with me the past couple years. The pictures of Nymphs, Fairies, Crogs, Spiricks, and Stymphs were spellbinding, terrifying, and whimsical all at once. Oh, and how on earth could one forget the GLORIOUS comic strip portions written by Hort? I could so easily imagine him writing and drawing every part of it, and it made me giggle so terribly hard.
And in addition to the lovely art, Soman’s--and Ami’s--writing was simply AMAZING. I’ve never been so captivated by a Course Catalog! The FAQ section was so exciting and humorous, and having Hester shove letters between the pages was such a clever idea. It was also a bit relatable, since I have an awful habit of slipping important notes, permission slips, and study guides into my books. “An Ever Never Roundtable” was SO. FREAKING. GOOD. I felt as if I were meeting up with a group of old friends as I heard them banter back and forth. It reminded me how much each character has grown through the series and honestly why I love each one. I never expected the Handbook to make me emotional… but it did. Quite a lot.
Now my copy is adorned with various small post-it-note sort of contraptions, marking some of my favorite parts. They include things like the hilarious idea of someone possibly using the storian as liquid eyeliner *cough SOPHIE cough* and the supossed Into The Woods reference when Sophie saids “Greens. Greens. Nothing but greens,” (pg. 137). Not to mention when Sophie guessed I was Agatha in a quiz or her perfect song “Some Girls”. Oh, and the AWESOME part where not only did Agatha write to Hester, but also reveal in her letter that she, Tedros, and Sophie were frequently corresponding. What about when Sophie admitted to Hort she remembered their dance or when Tedros perfectly explained how he and Agatha wouldn’t be having kids anytime soon? What a relief. Oh, and the explosive discovery that a new student named Nicola will soon be arriving to the schools, unaware she’s destined to save them? Couldthispossiblybetheplotofthesecretbook?
Overall, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions today and am so grateful I got to. To Soman Chainani, Ami Boghani, and Michael Blank--thank you. Thank you

I loved it!!!! Really loved it. The perfection! The handbook is nothing you will expect. The color, portraits, the heroes' whereabouts, humorous FAQs, uniform through the ages and more! And I think it gives a little hint about the new-top-secret-series (if my guess is right). Much better than I EVER expected. Even the back cover is interesting. We can even read about the Ever-Never Roundtable, which contains Sophie, Hort, Hester, Anadil, Dot, Kiko, Beatrix, Chaddick and Reena. And the last page!!!! Read this book. Buy it at the nearest bookstore. Like, right now. It was totally worth the money.

The book's great commercial success was considerably aided by its publication coinciding with the start of his three-month tour of the United States in the Spirit on behalf of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. The nation became obsessed with Lindbergh during the tour in which he was seen in person by more than 30 million Americans, a quarter of the nation's then population. No other author before or since ever had such an extensive, highly publicized tour that helped promote a book than did Lindbergh's "We" of himself and the Spirit during their 22,350-mile tour of the US. He visited 82 cities in all 48 states during which the nation's nascent aviation superhero delivered 147 speeches and rode 1,290 miles in parades.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh was born in Detroit Michigan on February 4, 1902. He died on the Hawaiian Island of Maui on August 26, 1974. The author of the foreword, Myron T. Herrick, was born on October 9, 1854 in Huntington Ohio and died on March 31, 1929 in Paris France where he was serving as US Ambassador. Fitzhugh Green, Senior, an Arctic Explorer who wrote the afterward, was born in St. Joseph Missouri on August 16, 1888 and died on December 2, 1947 in Danbury, Connecticut.

About the Author
Jack Snowman is Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology at Southern Illinois University. He earned his Ph.D. in educational psychology at Indiana University in 1975. His research is in the area of cognitive and learning strategies. His recent publications include "Learning Tactics and Strategies" in COGNITIVE CLASSROOM LEARNING (Academic Press, 1986) and "Explorations in Mnemonic Training" in IMAGERY AND RELATED MNEMONIC PROCESSING (Springer-Verlag, 1987).

Rick McCown is Professor in the School of Education at Duquesne University, PA. He earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University in 1980. He is active in the Educational Psychology community, including leading presentations at the American Educational Research Association conference. A colleague of Jack Snowman for 25 years, Dr. McCown shares Snowman's views about the role of educational psychology in teacher education. He is an accomplished writer, with published papers (one of which was co-authored with Snowman), journal articles, and book chapters.

Adventurous, addictive and wholly romantic

At first glance, it is easy to see why some modern readers might overlook ROSS POLDARK, the primogenial novel in Winston Graham’s THE NOVELS OF CORNWALL family saga. Originally published in 1945, most seventy-year-old books are now long forgotten. Its main character is a man—when to appeal to its primary audience most historical fiction is carried by a female protagonist. The setting can be off putting too. It begins in 1783, a difficult and depressing time in English history after the loss of the American Colonies, when social, political and economic upheaval crippled the country. Fueled, by angst, obsession and regret, it is about as far removed from the refined country drawing rooms, witty repartee and genteel romance found in Jane Austen novels as it could be.

Despite these questionable first impressions, this novel and its eponymous hero have “legs.” It has never gone out of print and continues to build a fan base, mostly generated from the 1975 – 1977 landmark television adaptation, Poldark, starring Robin Ellis. And now after forty years the BBC and PBS have joined forces again for a reboot of this very popular classic starring Aidan Turner as the swashbuckling hero. With so much clout behind it, who could not be tempted to see what the original novel was all about?

Set in Cornwall, Royal Army officer Captain Ross Poldark returns home a scarred and weary soldier from fighting in the American Revolutionary War. It is a disheartening homecoming. His father Joshua has recently died, his sweetheart Elizabeth Chynoweth is engaged to his cousin Francis Poldark and his inheritance, the family residence, farmland and tin mines lie totally derelict. There does not appear to be any reason for him to stay.

The local economy does not fare much better. The tin and copper mines owned by the landed gentry are in serious decline while nouveau riche banker George Warleggan prospers by extending credit, foreclosing and building a financial empire on the hard work of others. Bonded to the land, his tenants and the hope that Elizabeth will return to him, the temptation to leave and take the easy road is not even a serious option for this Poldark. With the help of two of his father’s idle servants, Jud and Prudie Paynter and a street urchin turned kitchen maid Demelza Carne, Ross fights to rebuild his pride and his family fortune.

“Looking east, upon Hendrawna Beach, the sea was very clam today: a smokey grey with here and there patches of violet and living, moving green. The waves were shadows, snakes under a quilt, creeping in almost unseen until they emerged in milky ripple at the waters edge.” (p. 33)

Surprisingly, we are immediately drawn in by author Winston Graham’s opening chapters. His writing is succinct, lyrical and hypnotic. He throws so much adversity in our hero’s path that we cannot help but root for the underdog. We learn early on that Ross Poldark is not your typical landed gentry. He may have left for the war a young ensign with a dubious reputation, but he returned two years later a seasoned captain—a mature leader of men tempered by British injustice and influenced by the ideals of liberty and equality by the American patriots. Deeply committed to helping the local villagers, his proletariat views are not welcomed by his own class. In his mind, what is right to be done cannot be done soon enough regardless of the consequences. He abhors aristocrats and their privileged way of life—delighting in thumbing his nose at them in scandalous ways.

About half-way into the novel we realize that Captain Ross Poldark could be an iconic romantic hero to rival Mr. Darcy, Mr. Rochester and John Thornton. He’s handsome. He’s rebellious. He’s broody. He’s the dark Poldark; the one with the youthful reputation as a wastrel, gamester and smuggler clutching at his left shoulder. He drinks and thinks way too much, and his cousin Verity, the only family member to visit him, is deeply concerned for his welfare.

Ross reaches a low point in his life at the wedding of his beloved Elizabeth to his cousin Francis. “All of the time at the back of his mind had been the half conviction that somehow the wedding would not be. It was as hard to believe as if someone had told him he was going to die.” (p. 44) During the wedding banquet at his uncle’s estate, Trenwith, while a cock fight is underway in the dining room for the amusement of the guests, Ross seeks out an encounter with Elizabeth who attempts to explain her decision to not follow through with their youthful promises to each other.

“There is no time to explain everything; perhaps I couldn’t explain it if there were. But I do want you to try to forgive me for any unhappiness I may have caused you.”

“There is nothing to forgive,” said Ross. “There was no formal undertaking.” (p. 48)

This conversation, and their choices of how to deal with the situation, foreshadows their continued, tormented relationship—her fickle nature and need to please her family and society, and his poker-faced indignation against adversity. Each of these personality foibles are the backbone of this story; while there are many other characters and subplots churning throughout the novel, it all comes back to Elizabeth’s decision to marry another man and Ross’s obsession to possess her.

Author Winston Graham’s writing is superb. Fast faced, descriptive and engaging, his style is a clever blending of both literary and commercial fiction. He particularly excels at multi-character scenes where the action and dialogue joyfully skips about a room. The Truro Assembly Room ball is one of our favorites. In the course of one chapter we are introduced to Cornwall’s polished society bathed in candlelight and decked out in elegant frocks and swaggering finery. Here we witness polite conversation and scurrilous gossip, flirtations and put-downs; meet a scheming mother with five unwed daughters, a handsome captain courting an on-the-shelf spinster and our hero Ross, scandalously dancing more than two times with a young, ambitious debutante, then fleeing the scene in anguish upon the arrival of Elizabeth and Francis. “Elizabeth’s beauty struck him afresh. The fact that another man should be in full enjoyment of her was like the torture of damnation.” (p. 64) Sullen and brooding, he arrives at a local tavern to drown his sorrows in brandy and the local light skirt.

This scene is as close as we get to anything remotely resembling a Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer novel. Refined society is not where Ross Poldark chooses to spend his time, nor does Winston Graham. This story is about money, or the lack of it, the shifting fortunes and social standing of the ruling classes, and the emotional forces that drive men to achieve success and the women that they desire. Along the way we learn a lot about late eighteenth-century copper and tin mining in Cornwall while swash and buckling through fist fights, riots, prison breaks, duels, poaching and pillaging. After all, this is a man’s story and we certainly see life through Ross Poldark’s manly eyes. When he rescues thirteen-year-old street urchin Demelza, and her mongrel dog Garrick at the Redruth Fair from a gang of bullies, we begin to see that there might be a softer side. Nobly, he feeds her and offers her a ride home to her father.

“They reached a break in the track. Ahead lay the way to Illugan; the right fork would bring him to skirt St. Ann’s whence he could join the usual lane to Swale.” (p. 75)

Before they part, he generously offers her a job as his kitchen maid. She gladly accepts, if only to get out of the thrashing that awaits her at home. Unknowingly, he has reached an important juncture in his life and it will never be the same after this point. Society is scandalized by his altruistic actions, thinking he has taken her for carnal reasons, but he holds firm and pays her greedy father her annual wages. She brings life to his lonely home with her youthful energy, humor and dedication to him. It will redeem his embittered soul.

When after three years of service her father wants his daughter back, and commands her to return, Demelza must comply. Heartbroken, she is certain that Nampara is her home now and that she cannot leave Ross. She loves him, even though he has never shown her anything but the respect that a master owes their servant. Desperate to stay, her first attempt at coquetry is a painful failure. Ross is angered and confused. “He felt like someone who had adopted a tiger cub without knowing what it would grow into.” (p. 215) Concerned by her flirtations he angrily tells her,

“You know what people say of you, Demelza?”

She shook her head. “What?”

“If you act like this, what they say of you will become true.”

She looked at him, candidly this time, without coquetry and without fear. “I live only for you, Ross.” (p. 217)

If you read one historical fiction novel this year, let it be Ross Poldark. Adventurous, addictive and wholly romantic, history buffs will applaud Graham’s meticulous research, Jane Austen fans will delight in the witty repartee and humor, and romance readers will swoon over the discovery of an iconic romantic hero truly worthy of wearing the mantle.

Ross Poldark to the Rescue

The first book in the Poldark Series by Winston Graham does not disappoint. It's been awhile since I've taken on the reading of a saga, but after watching the Masterpiece Theater Series based on these books and being an avid reader, I was sunk beyond recall. Ross Poldark has been serving England's war machine for three years in the colonies. He returns home after suffering some wounds - one to his leg and one to his head which has left a long scar down the left side of his face. He soon learns his father has passed, his home is in shambles and the love of his young life, Elizabeth, is now engaged to marry his cousin, Francis, the son of his Uncle Charles - the elder brother of his father - and the one who inherited most of the Poldark family's wealth.

The characteristic that stands out in Ross and which runs true through the first four novels in this series (that's as far as I've read) is that he has a highly volatile and passionate nature - sometimes to a fault. He's unhappy with the ruin of the estate he's inherited, he's unhappy with his slothful servants, Jud and Prudie, and he's unhappy with the fact he has no funds to help the tenants on his estate. But mostly, he's very unhappy and angry that he's lost Elizabeth - the fact she's marrying his cousin with whom he's always had a very friendly relationship simply adds insult to injury.

This passionate nature has its benefits and the reader is treated to instance after instance of how Ross goes about investing his energy in trying to do all the good he can to those within his sphere, albeit often coming across as a ruffian rather than a gentleman. There are several examples of Ross's goodwill but the one that is spotlighted in this book and the one which will eventually forever change his life, is the day he steps in to rescue a filthy and lice-ridden girl, Demelza, from being tormented by young ruffians. At the time Demelza is 13 years old and obviously has been beaten regularly by her father as evidenced from the scars on her back. Ross simply cannot allow her to return to her family without giving her another option so he offers to hire her as a serving wench in his home. His behavior often confuses the gentry society of which he has long been a part and his rescue and offer of a home to Demelza results in sordid rumors about why he has her there but Ross simply does not care. He has his reasons and they are quite innocent - he's a rescuer pure and simple and as these stories unfold, this type of behavior will occur over and over.

In addition to Ross's tendency toward rescue, he's tied into the land and the people who've worked in the two family mines - now shut down. Much of the storyline is dedicated to the business maneuverings in which he involves himself in attempts to get one of his mines - Wheal Leisure - up and working in order to employ the area's starving families and earn some money for his own household. He has hindrances to his efforts - the rich and powerful Warleggan family of bankers - who will continue to cause him problems throughout the series. To further complicate matters is his now tenuous relationship with Uncle Charles, Francis and Elizabeth especially since Francis and George Warleggan are very close friends - with George continually manipulating Francis. The one bright shining light in the family is his sweet cousin, Verity, who is a woman of good sense who shows herself to be a true friend to Ross through thick and thin. The fact Verity falls hard for an "unacceptable to her family" captain of a packet vessel, causes ongoing difficulties for Verity throughout the course of the first two novels.

Since this book covers four years, eventually Demelza grows up into a fascinating young woman who is generous, kind, fairy-like and very hard-working. She knows no other real love than her lord and master, Ross. He's been the only person who's ever been kind to her and she's loyal to the bone. However, when she begins to have feelings for Ross such as a young woman feels for a man, she eventually attempts to stir his interest which leads to one night together. Ross has mixed feelings about his part in the matter, but in a short time, he decides to take Demelza as his wife. This causes some major issues with the local gentry and within Demelza because both feel Ross has married beneath him. Ross, however, goes about in his customary ambivalent manner, assuring Demelza that she needs to consider herself better than she does and making no excuses to anyone for his choice of a wife. Demelza's feelings about her lack of social expertise is severely strained when Ross insists they join Francis and Elizabeth for Christmas. Amazingly, she comes through like a champ after receiving some help from Verity in social manners, a new dress and being simply "Demelza." Before long Ross realizes that Demelza has captured his heart - perhaps not quite in the manner Elizabeth still does - but enough that he brings himself to tell Demelza he loves her and indeed he treats her very well, they enjoy life together and Demelza tells Ross she is pregnant with their first child.

The setting of these books is Cornwall - an area which has always fascinated me. Should I ever travel to England, Cornwall is one of the top three places I would love to visit. I look forward to reading the next books in this series. It's obvious that Ross will continue to rescue many others even as he struggles to find his own personal happiness.

Love the PBS Series Love the Books

I saw the first season of the PBS series before reading the books, so my views are shaped by my admiration for the program. This book covers about a half of season one. What I appreciate most about this series is the complexity of the characters that Graham created. These people are real to me. The main characters have flaws that are believable. They struggle through difficult times and make decisions based on the circumstances of their status and upbringing at the time. So many historical fiction novels are written like costume dramas where the morays of today are imposed on a prior century. Poldark does not do that and therefore allows the reader to sink into the era and experience their struggles first-hand. It's as if Graham had actually written the books in the 18th century. At its heart, it's a love story and entails many different relationships woven together. There's nothing sappy about the story - every morsel of happiness is hard won. If you watch the TV series, the books follow the story fairly closely with more detail in the book. You should read this book with the expectation to read the entire series, because the story ends abruptly and without a real finish. I've now read several in the series and find they all end this way. You have to be in it for the long-haul. BTW, I listened to this book on audio and the reader is very good. While this first book is read by a man, there is a female reader for book 2 (Dimelsa). It took me by surprise at first, but she was very good, too. The male voice comes back for book 3. If you are an audio reader like me, you will like the presentation.
