The New York Times bestseller, which for 10 years has been a must-have for women in business, is now completely revised and updated. In this new edition, internationally recognized executive coach Lois P. Frankel reveals a distinctive set of behaviors-over 130 in all-that women learn in girlhood that ultimately sabotage them as adults. She teaches you how to eliminate these unconscious mistakes that could be holding you back and offers invaluable coaching tips that can easily be incorporated into your social and business skills. The results for hundreds of thousands of women have been career opportunities they never thought possible-at every stage of their career, from entry-level to the corner office! Stop making "nice girl" errors that can become career pitfalls, such as:

  • Mistake #13: Avoiding office politics. If you don't play the game, you can't possibly win.
  • Mistake #21: Multi-tasking. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it.
  • Mistake #54: Failure to negotiate. Don't equate negotiation with confrontation.
  • Mistake #70: Inappropriate use of social media. Once it's out there, it's hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube.
  • Mistake #82: Asking permission. Children, not adults, ask for approval. Be direct, be confident.

How Women Leaders Can Succeed Today
By Jesse Lahey
Within just one year of completing college, women are earning 8% less than the men with whom they graduated. By mid-career, that number increases to more than 20%. Some women roar ahead in their careers, but so many more stagnate. How can you join those who are succeeding?

I’m a guy, not a woman, and yet I was irresistibly drawn by the book title as well as at least a third of the 133 unconscious behaviors that ultimately sabotage women (and many men).

This book will make you mad, yet it is fun to read and very practical. It could change your career trajectory. And regardless of whether you are male or female, it can equip you to help the women in your life succeed (or at least not get in their way).

This is one of the best business books I've ever read
By Angie Haney
This is one of the best business books I've ever read. It's difficult to navigate the business world as a female because if you come off too strong you're an unfeeling b-word, but if you're too soft then you're interpreted as being unintelligent and you're demoted to pastry pick-up. The author gives practical advice on how to dodge this catch-22 on a daily basis in the office while still being yourself. I also really liked her guidance on personal appearance, and desk/office appearance. I didn't think about it before I read this, but I really do judge people by the appearance of their desk or office area. It's an opportunity to advertise your personal brand for the better or worse. Most importantly, the title can appear callous to some people. I must say that after reading the book to not let the title avert you from reading it. The author promotes professionalism, hard work, ingenuity, but not at the expense of integrity. Her whole point is that you can be tactful and assertive.

Put On Your Big Girl Panties and Step Up To The Plate
By Megan Hewins
I had an epiphany-like moment over and over again when Frankel points out that when people shame a woman for unladylike behavior, it's not because there is such a shameful thing as unladylike behavior, it's because it's the easiest and most effective means of getting whatever it is they want out of you.

Because we've been so conditioned to be pleasing to others, accusing a woman of behaving in an unpleasing manner is like an automatic shut off button that manipulative people use against us. Accusations and implications of this manner have no basis in reality, it's just a means of shutting us up and keeping us out.

I'd downloaded several other career advice audiobooks before this one, as I was looking for career advice because I'm a new grad starting my first corporate job. I found the other new grad career advice books rather trite and unhelpful. I was hesitant about this purchase because I wasn't worried about snagging the "corner office," so much as just getting started, but I am so glad I found this gem as I begin my journey through the corporate world.

I'm so impressed with the book I intend on buying copies for female friends as graduation presents. I also loved that Frankel recommends a plethora of other resources and career coaching books throughout. She is a generous author who never fails to cite and recommend her influences, a rare skill in a world of self-promotional and narcissistic branding.

I know a lot of women will bristle at Frankel's direct advice that hacks away at traditional femininity - in a perfect world, we should be able to be ourselves at work and get ahead - but we don't live in that world, and a more subtle idea in this book is that perhaps many of the soft-fuzzy-nice-girl characteristics women have aren't inherent, so much as conditioned, and in the process of unconditioning ourselves, we find out how human we really are. Frankel doesn't waste time pining for an idealistic world - this book isn't for idealistic women, it's for ambitious women who want to succeed and thrive in the world that exists. Success in the corporate world, like it or not, entails conformity. Frankel points out the mistakes women are making in regards to that expectation of conformity in terms of how we prioritize performing gender over performing our jobs.

And at times it's a bitter pill to swallow. Nearly all the advice comes back to: stop acting like a coy little girl; put on your big girl panties and step up to the plate. It's hard because it forced me to confront how infantalized some of my behaviors are. As girls there are many emotional developmental areas where we're not encouraged to grow. Girls are protected from overcoming many barriers, like failure, and consequently there is a kind of emotional stunting that we turn a blind eye to and justify through the idea of inherent gender characteristics. And our society will let us tread water here in that emotional retardation for the rest of our lives, but if you want to get ahead, you have to get over it. Frankel's book is the first step on that path because she simply made me aware of what was in my blind spot. The book holds up a mirror - if you don't like what you see, it's on you to change it.

Review
"After these books are published, there will be no need for anyone else to write a how-to-understand-Deleuze book. The clarity of the prose, the careful explanation of each difficult and important concept, and the lack of any jargon whatsoever make this the definitive commentary on Deleuze."
-Dorothea Olkowski, University of Colorado

Sexy Intelligentsia
By Jeremy Glazier
Deleuze's work is complex and often difficult, especially for the reader who comes with an interest in art, music, and literature but little familiarity with (or perhaps tolerance for) late-twentieth century philosophy.
In this study of Deleuze's writing on music and painting, Ronald Bogue distills the essence of the philosopher's decades-long interest in these disciplines. This is no "Deleuze for Dummies"--some familiarity with Deleuzian concepts is assumed and expected. As with similar texts (Harari's _How James Joyce Made His Name: A Reading of the Final Lacan_, for example, or Rochlitz's _The Disenchantment of Art: The Philosophy of Walter Benjamin_), _Deleuze on Music, Painting, and the Arts_ tells us probably as much about Bogue as it does about Deleuze.
This is useful, however, because Bogue has read widely and with comprehension not only in Deleuze but in the whole network of related subject matter touching on his concerns--Jacob von Uexkull, Susan Oyama, Paul Griffiths and Alois Riegl among others. Additionally, Bogue's consideration of Modern music is exemplary for its clear-sighted and vivid engagement with difficult (what Adorno might even call radical) music. Take as an example this brief segment from the discussion of Messiaen's spectacular _Catalogue d'oiseaux_: "...Messiaen never approaches an individual bird's song in isolation, but instead juxtaposes it with the songs of other species and situates it within an evocative sonic landscape....Such pictorialism might suggest that Messiaen's aesthetic is purely mimetic, but the actual results of his practice belie this suspicion." He goes on to discuss the piece's motivic development and the composer's modal style.
Deleuze is at his most brilliant in the writings on Messiaen and Francis Bacon, and Bogue's book allows easier access for readers without the necessary time or desire to wade through thousands of pages to find what they're looking for. Of course, the ideas about music and painting are inextricable from the other ideas in those pages (there are, after all, 'a thousand plateaus', and it is not impossible that the reader may feel the need to explore further to obtain a more complete understanding--which is, after all, not such a bad thing....)
At the beginning of the twenty-first century we could do worse than immerse ourselves in a study of Deleuze. For the student of music and art, as well as for those interested in expanding their knowledge of one of the great thinkers of that long, dark, and now late century, this is a valuable book.

Barkskins: A Novel, by Annie Proulx

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
From Annie Proulx—the Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning author of The Shipping News and “Brokeback Mountain,” comes her masterwork: an epic, dazzling, violent, magnificently dramatic novel about the taking down of the world’s forests.

In the late seventeenth century two penniless young Frenchmen, René Sel and Charles Duquet, arrive in New France. Bound to a feudal lord, a “seigneur,” for three years in exchange for land, they become wood-cutters—barkskins. René suffers extraordinary hardship, oppressed by the forest he is charged with clearing. He is forced to marry a Mi’kmaw woman and their descendants live trapped between two inimical cultures. But Duquet, crafty and ruthless, runs away from the seigneur, becomes a fur trader, then sets up a timber business. Proulx tells the stories of the descendants of Sel and Duquet over three hundred years—their travels across North America, to Europe, China, and New Zealand, under stunningly brutal conditions—the revenge of rivals, accidents, pestilence, Indian attacks, and cultural annihilation. Over and over again, they seize what they can of a presumed infinite resource, leaving the modern-day characters face to face with possible ecological collapse.

Proulx’s inimitable genius is her creation of characters who are so vivid—in their greed, lust, vengefulness, or their simple compassion and hope—that we follow them with fierce attention. Annie Proulx is one of the most formidable and compelling American writers, and Barkskins is her greatest novel, a magnificent marriage of history and imagination.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of June 2016: Annie Proulx’s Barkskins is an epic, multigenerational novel of dynasty building and, ultimately, ecological and cultural destruction. The novel is as masterful as anything she has written. Beginning in the 1600s, the book tracks the lineage of two French immigrants, Charles Duquet and Rene Sel, who arrive in the Canadian region of New France looking for a better life. Sel marries a Mi’kmaq woman and they have children. Duquet founds the beginnings of a vast timber empire. The book follows generations of Sels and Dukes (nee Duquets), eventually concluding in 2013. The vast forests of North America are the key to both families’ futures, and the forest itself becomes a character in the novel, bringing wealth, taking lives, and slowly dwindling. While the book’s length and character count require much from the reader, it remains taut and compelling throughout. This is not a book for the 140 character-based reader. It’s a book lover’s book. --Chris Schluep, The Amazon Book Review

Review
“Annie Proulx’s Barkskins is remarkable not just for its length, but for its scope and ambition. It’s a monumental achievement, one that will perhaps be remembered as her finest work. . . It’s exhilarating to read Proulx, a master storyteller; she is as adept at placing us in the dripping, cold Mi’kma’ki forests as in the stuffy Duke & Sons parlors. Despite the length, nothing seems extraneous, and not once does the reader sense the story slipping from Proulx’s grasp, resulting in the kind of immersive reading experience that only comes along every few years.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Part ecological fable à la Ursula K. Le Guin, part foundational saga along the lines of Brian Moore's Black Robe and, yes, James Michener's Centennial, Proulx's story builds in depth and complication without becoming unduly tangled and is always told with the most beautiful language. Another tremendous book from Proulx, sure to find and enthrall many readers.” (Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review))

“Proulx’s signature passion and concern for nature as well as her unnerving forensic fascination with all the harm that can befall the human body charge this rigorously researched, intrepidly imagined, complexly plotted, and vigorously written multigenerational epic. [With an] extensive and compelling cast, Proulx’s commanding epic about the annihilation of our forests is nothing less than a sylvan Moby-Dick replete with ardently exacting details about tree cutting from Canada and Maine to Michigan, California, and New Zealand, with dramatic cross-cultural relationships and with the peculiar madness catalyzed by nature’s glory. Here, too, are episodes of profound suffering and loss, ambition and conviction, courage and love. With a forthcoming National Geographic Channel series expanding its reach, Proulx’s commanding, perspective-altering epic will be momentous.” (Booklist, Starred Review)

“[It’s] a tale too beautiful to miss, excellent for long afternoons spent swaying in a hammock.” (Good Housekeeping)

“Magnificent... Barkskins flies... One of the chief pleasures of Proulx’s prose is that it conveys you to so many vanished wildwoods, where you get to stand ‘tiny and amazed in the kingdom of pines.’ This is also the great sadness of Barkskins. The propulsive tension here is generated not by wondering what will happen to each character, but by knowing that the forests will be leveled one after another... If Barkskins doesn’t bear exquisite witness to our species’s insatiable appetite for consumption, nothing can.” (Anthony Doerr, Outside Magazine)

"A masterpiece." (Buzzfeed)

“Annie Proulx – the magnificent American writer who brought us ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘The Shipping News’ – scores once again with the captivating ‘Barkskins.’ . . . Her prose is often glorious, her several protagonists unforgettable. Proulx taps a vein here, helping to make ‘Barkskins” one of the most exciting books I have read in years. Proulx has pulled out all the stops." (Karen Brady, Buffalo News)

“Barkskins is an awesome monument of a book, a spectacular survey of America’s forests dramatized by a cast of well-hewn characters.Such is the magnetism of Proulx’s narrative that there’s no resisting her thundering cascade of stories. A vast woods you’ll want to get lost in. . . Barkskins is a towering new work of environmental fiction.” (Ron Charles, The Washington Post)

“Annie Proulx weaves [a] wealth of research, [and] brilliant imagination in [her] new novel Barkskins. Annie Proulx is a fearless writer. Like Melville's whaling and McMurtry's ranching, [Barkskins] provides a cast of colorful characters — and a means of examining their relationships to the natural world and the continent's indigenous people. [With] delicious prose . . . Barkskins has a large cast, but that's a showcase for Proulx's gift for creating lively, complex characters. Proulx's style is inimitably her own, but it echoes here with those of great influences: Dickens, Melville, Twain, Faulkner and more.” (Tampa Bay Times)

“Annie Proulx returns with a great long read for the summer . . . Worth the wait, [Barkskins is] a stunning, bracing, full-tilt ride through 300 years of U.S. and Canadian history, told through two families whose fortunes are shaped, for better and worse, by the Europeans' discovery of North America's vast forests. With Barkskins, Annie Proulx blows out the horizons. The novel has a satisfying global sweep, with the type of full-immersion plot that keeps you curled in your chair, reluctant to stop reading. Barkskins is a tour de force.” (Elle)

“Fans of Annie Proulx have waited 14 years for a new novel from her. This summer, she has rewarded them. Her eye for detail offers readers glimpses into a world that is almost unimaginable. Proulx's novel will leave readers with new perspectives on a familiar history. It will also, perhaps, make some readers pause, this summer, during a summer stroll perhaps, and consider the manmade environment — the roads, the sidewalks, the homes, the cellphone towers, the flowerbeds — amid the tall, long-lived trees.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Stunning, monumental... a moving opus of evolving Western environmental values in novel form.” (Jim Carmin, Minneapolis Star Tribune)

“Monumental. [With] prose of directness, clarity, rhythmic power and oaken solidity. . . Barkskins is a potently imagined chronicle of mankind’s dealings with the North American forests." (Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal)

“Barkskins is masterful, full of an urgent, tense lyricism, its plotting beautifully unexpected, its biographical narratives flowing into one another like the seasons. Ambitious. . . A marvel. . .[Barkskins] is a long novel worth your time.” (Charles Finch, USA Today)

“Towering. . . With gorgeous imagery, clean prose and remarkable sensitivity, [Barkskins is] as powerful and important as any literary work produced on this continent in the three centuries spanned by the story. “Barkskins” is “The Giving Tree” for grown-ups.” (Sandra Levis, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

“Dazzling. . . Proulx’s characters are vivid, insistent, captivating. . . nary a page goes by without a few exquisitely observed historical details. The temptation to consider Barkskins under the rubric of a Great American Novel is difficult to resist, given its scope. But Proulx’s ambitions seem to be keyed differently. Melville’s Moby-Dick, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, Morrison’s Beloved—all of these books might be doomed in their respective attempts to somehow encompass the United States in its full complexity, but they at least focus on that burgeoning and manifold nation. Proulx, in contrast, establishes in Barkskins a narrative so grand in spatial and temporal scope, so broad in theme, that it cannot conceivably be strictly American. Her pitch-perfect sentences, instead, encompass the entire Western world, and its ever-growing concern with ecological and environmental change.” (Jeffrey Zuckerman, The New Republic)

“Extraordinary. . . Barkskins is the masterpiece Proulx was meant to write.” (John Freeman, Boston Globe)

“Enthralling. . . Proulx’s human characters are vividly conceived. Barkskins brims with a granular sense of human experience over a period of 300 years. And like many novels by excellent writers, Barkskins encourages understanding, if not empathy, for characters whose outlooks we might usually dismiss. One of the great achievements of this novel is to create a tragic personality for the environment. Proulx’s beautiful prose renders and exultant view of the life of forest worlds lost to us.”  (Bookpage)

“Like the best realists, Proulx can make us see the world and its inhabitants with greater clarity. Juggling so many different plotlines and characters becomes easier when you have, as Proulx does, a Dickensian gift for quick portraiture... Proulx reminds us that the world we live in was made possible by the destruction of the world that preceded it. The novel concludes with Saptisia Sel, the head of the Breitsprecher Tree Project, asking, ‘Can’t we try again? Can’t we fix what we broke?’ It’s an urgent question, perhaps the urgent question, one that we should all be asking ourselves now.” (Anthony Domestico, Boston Globe)

“‘Barkskins’ is Annie Proulx’s greatest novel yet. [Her] talent for bringing individuals alive with a single perfectly-turned line has never been sharper than in these pages. … It's a completely masterful performance, the greatest thing this great novelist has ever written.” (Christian Science Monitor)

“Annie Proulx’s new work is a tribute to the world’s boreal forests, an intricately detailed narrative of geography, history and humanity that is both exhilarating and mesmerizing... [T]his is not a novel to peck at or flick through, but one to read slowly and to savour as a long and fulfilling feast.” (The Economist)

“Few authors are as uniquely qualified as Annie Proulx (The Shipping News) to sustain a novel as long as Barkskins. Pages melt away as readers zoom through the decades. Proulx’s story is bigger than any one man, one death, or even one culture: It’s about the effect civilization and society have had on the land. In her magical way, Proulx leaves the reader with an impression of not only a collection of people, but our people and the country that shaped us as we shaped it. This is Proulx at the height of her powers as an irreplaceable American voice.” (Entertainment Weekly (Grade A))

“Annie Proulx’s 10th book is ambitious and essential. Barkskins is grand entertainment in the tradition of Dickens and Tolstoy. Barkskins is awesome and urgent. And if we’re lucky enough to survive the Anthropocene we’ve seemingly wrought, then Barkskins will surely survive as the crowning achievement of Proulx’s distinguished career, but also as perhaps the greatest environmental novel ever written.” (Peter Geye, San Francisco Chronicle)

"Barkskins leaves no board unturned as it covers the industry that brought us plywood, cheap paper and prefab housing. [With] Proulx’s stunning stylistic gifts . . . She is a writer’s writer, and one whose deep interest in history provides the long view of how our environmental recklessness has brought us to a point of reckoning." (Helen Embry Heltzel, Seattle Times)

“Proulx sketches each person with vigorous, unforgettable strokes . . . read it, absorb its urgent message.” (Annalisa Quinn, NPR)

“An epic capstone to 80-year-old Proulx’s impressive career, Barkskins surpasses even the extraordinary The Shipping News as her finest novel." (Cliff Froehlich, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

“Annie Proulx’s stunning new Barkskins is a bracing, full-tilt ride through 300 years of U.S. and Canadian history. With Barkskins, she blows out the horizons. The novel has a satisfying global sweep, with the type of full-immersion plot that keeps you curled in your chair, reluctant to stop reading. Barkskins is a tour de force [and] was worth the wait.” (Elle)

“Epic . . . Violent, monumental and often breathtaking, Barkskins is a colossal achievement.” (Columbus Dispatch)

"A masterpiece, Barkskins encompasses a breadth of themes and history rarely approached by any writer, girded by peerless research and Proulx's X-ray vision into the human heart. But the triumph of the novel lies in sentences that burst from the page, ideas that move and breathe with mission.” (Hamilton Cain, O The Oprah Magazine)

“The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Brokeback Mountain and The Shipping News delivers an epic novel that begins with two impoverished Frenchmen, full of hope, who migrate to Canada in the 18th century and become indentured woodcutters, or 'barkskins.' The following 300-year history of two families spans cultures and continents, and probes North Americans’ predatory history with our now-vanishing natural world.” (Ms. Magazine)

Native American Loggers
By Fran
Barkskins is a sweeping saga recounting the ecological costs of progress. Forests are destroyed and Native Americans are marginalized. Reminiscent of James Michener's "Centennial" the author reminds us that this land is only ours to borrow and pass down to succeeding generations.

Two illiterate woodsmen, Rene Sel and Charles Duquet arrive in "New France" in the 17th Century only to endure extraordinary hardship as indentured servants. The goal is to work for 3 years in exchange for a plot of land. Sel is forced to marry a Mi'kmaq Indian and becomes a barkskin or wood cutter. Duquet escapes, travels the world, and starts a logging empire.

Duquet researches the timber trade learning the value of white pine trees to the Europeans. Duke & Sons Logging Co. is established. The Dukes realize that the forest is not eternal but deforestation still occurs as new settlers set fires to clear land. Only a small amount of forest becomes usable lumber. Most forest land is burned or abandoned in the name of progress as settlers build log cabins and RR ties are cut to build a transcontinental railroad.

Rene Sel and his descendants carve out a meager existence. Hunting places are destroyed, and the salmon rivers are clogged with logs and sawdust. Medicinal healing plants are destroyed as the forests are pushed back. To survive, the Mi'kmaq must take jobs the white men don't want. They become wood choppers and loggers. They are considered to be disposable labor, good as long as they last.

Annie Proulx gives us a detailed, extensively researched look into deforestation and the destruction of the Native American way of life. Proulx reminds us that we must find ways to renew our forests. I highly recommend this tome.

Thank you to Net Galley for an advanced digital copy of Barkskins.

Depressing
By Kathleen M. Newman
I am saying it is OK because I did read some of it every day, and I did finish it. But that said, I was very disappointed as I had expected a lot more from the author of Brokeback Mountain and The Shipping News. It is long, very convoluted and switches back and forth between characters much too often. You do not get to understand the characters or their motivations. It is depressing from the very start to the very end. No matter how the characters seem to raise their children and families, the next generation are almost always losers in some sense of the word. Pieces of the story are left in midair, and never finished, so you are left wondering what happened to Mr. Bone's Ax factory and why Jinot's son didn't inherit.
You do get an understanding of how the "whiteman" denuded the North American forests and how they wiped out the Canadian and NE Native American population. But it is so unrelentingly negative and unfortunately, repetitive, that it makes for a poor story. I kept reading hoping I would get somewhere, but it never happens. So I would try and read it, but don't expect a satisfying and engrossing read. Also keep ou dictionary handy, as well as Google, because many words are vague and not always used in their normal context.

Thank you, thank you Annie Proulx
By Renee
I cannot be neutral about Annie Proulx's writing. The feel of her language is always true to me, no matter the variation, and her story lines carry just enough twist to go beyond ordinary, casting the everyday into a tumult of natural forces that seem to laugh at our sense of control. I've been waiting and waiting for this book to come out and now I'm almost tearful to be nearing its end. Barkskins is a great read, as good as any of Proulx's works, maybe even the best so far. The platform is the forests of North America (and then, those elsewhere), trees greedily hunted and hacked down by various invading peoples who see the trees only for their cash value in wood, whether for ship masts or roof shingles -- no regard for what the trees provide, as is, to place and persons. Barkskins spans generations, as does the devastation of the forests and the decline of the characters in natural and material health and wealth. The story is haunting, the tragic shifts palpable, some characters dear and cherished, others despicable -- each and every one flawed, as are we. The reader, centuries ahead of the tale's beginning, knows the ultimate upshot. To realize it through the persons living it, from so many angles, is nothing short of brilliant. Thank you, thank you, AP!

Best step forward into the RE world!
By JrsyGal
As a newbie...I think this is my best step forward. I haven't finished the book completely. Am kinda like more than half way through it, but am so impressed that I felt the need to let you folks know what an amazing investment this has been. This book guides me to things that will help me understand and be prepared for the first few days/months and years while being established in the RE world. I don't want to give away the key points...but all I will say is that this is a MUST READ for newbie and aspiring RE agents. This is kind of like a training and one to one coaching session in itself. Thakyou for this Frank. A pleasant co-incidence is that even my RE pre-licensing course's instructors name was frank...and I am so glad I chose him over the rest of the schools.

Ok hope this helped.

Cheers.

Very Informative
By Elaine Davis
I like this book because it answers questions that aren't normally included in your training and educational classes when you first enter the Affiliate Broker world! It was very concise, humorous and helpful. It helps you deal with the relatives who want you to waive your commission, the clients who want to haggle with you on your commission, what to expect as a newbie, some of the "darker" (a.k.a. "not so fun") aspects to expect and so much more. I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to the business.

is as pertinent to today's real estate arena as a VHS player is to todays entertainment market
By MilesAway
The cellphone on the cover should have been a give away. Though only 12 years old, most of the content is as pertinent to today's real estate arena as a VHS player is to todays entertainment market. The book was published before social media, the recession, etc., etc..

If your instructor tells you to buy this book then you know why your instructor is teaching real estate and not practicing it.

Wonderful calendar!
By California Collectors Group
2nd year in a row I bought this calendar and love it. The format is the same as last year's calendar, except with new/different pictures for 2016, so I am repeating my review here: "Great calendar and format, and the pictures are charming. Just want to jump in every picture. I appreciate that there is a new illustration for every week. Vivid colors and quality paper. Layout with illustration and note space on left, weekly grid on right Monday - Sunday (Sat and Sun grouped together thankfully). Lots of space to write in the weekly grid. Ample space for notes in the back. Full yearly calendar in front, plus 2014 and 2016 in back for reference. Opens flat. Big, clear fonts. Just perfect. I buy engagement calendars every year and am so glad I tried this one! Will be buying more for gifts. Have previously purchased Simplicity, Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, Reading Woman, Japanese Woodblock in other years, and this year's Country Seasons is one my favs. I hope Andrews McMeel Publishing keeps making this one - it's a real winner." Thank you to the publisher for bringing this back again this year. I will buy it every year if you keep publishing it!

I love this calendar
By Vegas Bound
I love this calendar! I purchased the Debbie Mumm engagement calendar for years and years, but they were discontinued a few years back. So I went looking for something else this year and found John Sloane. The pictures are beautiful, the pages are nice and thick and durable. I wish that I had discovered John Sloane and his engagement calendars years ago!

The Division of Christendom: Christianity in the Sixteenth Century, by Hans J. Hillerbrand

In The Division of Christendom, revered historian Hans J. Hillerbrand details the events and ideas of the sixteenth century and contends that the Protestant Reformation must be seen as an interplay of religious, political, and economic forces in which religion played a major role. Hillerbrand tells the fascinating story of the ways in which theological disagreements divided the centuries-old Christian church and the roles that leading characters such as Luther, Zwingli, Anabaptists, and Calvin played in establishing new churches, even as Roman Catholicism continued to develop in its own ways. The book covers all significant aspects of this period and interprets these important events in their own context while reflecting on the consequences of the Reformation for later periods and for today.

It's All Right Here. All of it.
By Bookworm
I shouldn't even be writing this review because doing so only creates my competition. I'm writing it for Robert McKee out of respect and love for him as one of the best instructors I've never met. I have both STORY and now, DIALOGUE in hardcover, on my Kindle, and the audio version (he narrates his books) in my headphones. I read it, I listen to it and take it with me when I travel. Sometimes I listen and read at the same time. Most nights I listen to the audio version in my sleep. In other words, I eat, sleep and breathe this book. I did the same thing with Story, his other book. I may go to my grave never fully comprehending the vast wealth of knowledge contained in these two books. That's OK. What I can tell you is this. With nothing but STORY as my guide, my very first screenplay took seven months and thirty-five drafts from start to finish. But. That screenplay became a Hallmark Movies and Mysteries feature film. The producers liked it so much they gave me another assignment. That one took six weeks, and they bought the first draft. I'm now working on my fifth script; this one is in the six-figure category, with five figures upfront just for the Treatment. And I owe it all to everything I've learned from studying Robert McKee, supplemented by what I learned from everyone else. Over the past thirty years, I’ve studied with forty plus instructors and highlighted hundreds of books and listened to dozens of recorded seminars. All that information is summed up and thoroughly explained in Robert McKee's two books STORY and now DIALOGUE. I won't live long enough to absorb everything he teaches. And I still study two hours a day as a warm up for my writing. I’d recommend Aaron Sorkin, Warner Hertzog, William Goldman (both Sorkin and McKee say he's the greatest), Blake Synder, Chris Vogler, Michael Hauge, William Akers, and anybody else you can find who’s willing to share their knowledge. Because you never know when a concept you didn’t realize you didn’t understand or needed is going to show up. Especially when presented from a different perspective. Having said that, if you are serious, and I mean dead serious, about becoming a working screenwriter, or any other kind of fiction writer for that matter, then you have no choice but to study McKee like your literary life depends on it. Buy the hardcover, buy the Kindle version, and buy the audio version of DIALOGUE and STORY. And supplement these two works with any other material that speaks to you. If you do this, you will become a first class screenwriter or novelist or playwright, because all three genres are only different ways of presenting a Story. If you can’t commit to this, unless you’re a genius or prodigy, you’re wasting valuable time which could be spent following your true life calling. But if your heart’s desire is to become a working writer, then sooner or later you’ll have to know everything in McKee’s two books. So, you might as well bite the bullet and jump in head first. It's all right here in STORY and DIALOGUE. All of it. Thank you, Mr. McKee. You, sir, changed my life.-- Jimmy Hager

Read it once in about 3 days, going through the highlights again already, this one is an investment, not a purchase.
By Matthew I.
Excellent supplement to 'Story' - with examples of speech from popular stories that really drive home the content. It shows how to immerse dialogue into your scene(s) to give the words more meaning, and in a tension-raising-cycle, turn and give the scene itself more impact. I enjoy writing dialogue more with this better perspective of what to look for, and what questions to ask before giving my characters words. This is a book that will get multiple re-reads for reference and increase in understanding as I look to improve my craft and skill-set. Thanks Robert and company!

ONE OF THE TWO BEST BOOKS ON SCREENWRITING
By cf otto
Probably the best book on screenwriting ever (besides Egri), though there is also much here for the novelist and playwright. I am a professional TV writer, of long-standing (35 years), and I can tell you I used this book to figure out how to fix the problems of a complex pilot I'm writing; the author truly " guided me home." And lest you think I'm a McKee sycophant, I am not. I found little in STORY for me. The only thing I disagree with in DIALOGUE is that the author sells his own work short: it isn't just for those who are "lost" in their writing, like me, and the student, it's for anyone who writes fiction for a living, in any form, no matter how much experience they have. It's that good.

Three Roads to the Alamo: The Lives and Fortunes of David Crockett, James Bowie, and William Barret Travis, by William C. Davis

Three Roads to the Alamo is the definitive book about the lives of David Crockett, James Bowie and William Barret Travis -- the legendary frontiersmen and fighters who met their destiny at the Alamo in one of the most famous and tragic battles in American history -- and about what really happened in that battle.

William C. Davis, a distinguished Civil War historian and biographer, illuminates the great western migration of the early 19th century through these remarkable figures -- representative of the three distinct types of men responsible for pushing American civilization west of the Mississippi.

Through tremendous research and with unprecedented access to Mexican military archives, Davis strips away the many layers of myth, legend and fable that surrounded Crockett, Bowie and Travis during their lives and, even more emphatically, after their deaths, portraying them as they really were -- heroic and unheroic, of great stature and deeply flawed, law abiding and lawbreaking.

Crockett stood for the thousands who were always on the edge of the wilderness, for whom no home was ever permanent. Bowie epitomized those who invariably followed'the entrepreneurs and exploiters, the men who profited, often outside the law, and moved on to the next potential bonanza. And Travis was the man of community and society, the lawgiver, the town builder, even the founder of a state or nation -- one of the millions who came to stay and create.

Though Travis, Crockett and Bowie came from different backgrounds and began their lives in different parts of the country at different times, they were united by their Scots-Irish heritage; by the restlessness and ambition that kept pushing them west to the frontier, which moved with them; by their involvement in the Texas settlement and revolution; and most famously by their meeting at the crossroads of the Alamo in the swift and deadly battle of March 6, 1836.

Because of their reputations and actions, these three men are deservedly the most legendary heroes of the Alamo. However, Davis has uncovered and reconstructed much of what actually happened, and he frequently challenges or debunks other versions of the battle, which have prevailed for more than a century.

Revealing, persuasive and controversial, Three Roads to the Alamo makes a significant contribution to American history and permanently changes and deepens our understanding and perception of the Alamo and these three American icons.Three Roads to the Alamo is a Main Selection of the History Book Club, an Alternate Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and an Alternate Selection of the Quality Paperback Book Club

Amazon.com Review
Ever since the day in March 1836 when an obscure Spanish mission in Texas fell to Mexican forces led by President Santa Anna, Americans have been exhorted to "remember the Alamo." And remember it we do--primarily as the place where American folk legends Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Travis met their end fighting for Texas independence. Though it is primarily the Alamo we remember today, the battle itself takes up just a few pages of William C. Davis's Three Roads to the Alamo; Davis is far more interested in what brought three such disparate men as Crockett, Bowie, and Travis to Texas in the first place than in how they died there. As any schoolchild knows, Davy Crockett was the "king of the wild frontier," a bona fide folk hero in his own time who rode his legend to political office first in Tennessee and then as a United States congressman. Bowie was both less well known and less heroic--a land speculator not above resorting to fraud and forgery to get what he wanted, while William Travis, the youngest of the three, brought little but potential with him to Texas.

Davis does a good job of illuminating both the personalities of his subjects and the situation in which they found themselves in Texas. He thoroughly explores the lives of these three men--their successes, their failures, their hopes for the future--and lays out the arguments for and against Texan independence from Mexico in which they found themselves embroiled. By the time Crockett, Bowie, and Travis finally arrive at the Alamo, it seems the inevitable conclusion to the roads they each have been traveling over the course of their lifetimes. Three Roads to the Alamo is a fine piece of historical research and an entertaining read, as well.

In 1836, Bowie and Travis, who would lead the 200 doomed Texas rebels at the Alamo, met for the first time at the walled adobe buildings that were largely comprised of the church of San Jose y Santiago del Alamo de Parras. A few days later, David Crockett wandered in from Tennessee, where he had lost his bid for reelection to Congress and vowed never to return. In the siege of the compound, all three would die violently in the predawn hours of March 6. Crockett had long been a legend in his own time when he turned up in San Antonio to join Bowie and Travis in the pantheon of frontier gallants. Davis, a much-published historian of 19th-century America, contends that we "part reluctantly with our myths, and the more so when by removing the fable, we leave a hole in the story that we cannot fill with fact." In weaving the three strands of his narrative, which come together only in the last pages as the frontiersman, con man and entrepreneur join forces in the Alamo, Davis evokes boisterous Jacksonian America. His 187 pages of notes attest to the thoroughness of his research. Of the three, Crockett comes off the best, as inventive, yet not immoral like the other two. Bowie, a forger of land claims, and Travis, an unscrupulous country lawyer, hardly fit our prescription for heroes after Davis is done with them. His relentless search for facts sometimes bogs down the reader in excessive detail, yet that may be the best way to reduce romantic myths to reality. Illustrations not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Sure, many people remember the famous Davy Crockett show theme song, but who was he really, and what about the other two major figures who came together with Crockett in that dramatic last stand at the Alamo? Comparatively little has been written about Jim Bowie or William Travis, and so much of Alamo history is either tremendously partisan, ungrounded in historical realities, or both. Davis (A Way Through the Wilderness, LJ 2/1/95) has a dependable record of writing and research into early American, in particular Southern, history. His newest work is a readable, stimulating, and exceptionally well-researched narrative history of Crockett, Travis, Bowie, and the westward expansion they helped lead. Davis is the first writer, American or Mexican, to engage in substantial research in the official Mexican archives, and his work is a vast improvement over Don Graham's sophomorically iconoclastic and poorly edited book about the three men, Duel of Eagles (LJ 7/90). Highly recommended for any collection concerned with American expansion into the Southwest or Southern history and essential for regional collections.ACharles V. Cowling, SUNY at Brockport

Had Davis decided to split this in the three books, there would be the best three books on these three Texas heroes ever
By Gene Rhea Tucker
William C Davis sometimes doesn't get his due from academic historians because he sells books. Most academics write dry, boring tomes that nobody reads because they are full of inane and pretentious theories that only interest other academic pedants. William C Davis, however, is a historian and the old mode. This book is thoroughly, thoroughly, thoroughly researched. The endnotes are several hundred pages long, and some of the individual notes spanned several pages. He explains in these notes where his sources come from how they're better than previous books, etc. Nobody, even the most academic of Texas historians, can quibble that this book is well researched, well written, and just flat out good. This is the best triple biography of Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Barrett Travis ever done. Had Davis decided to split this in the three books, there would be the best three books on these three Texas heroes ever. Davis corrects many historical inaccuracies about these characters, putting their lives into focus, defining them as men of their times. Jim Bowie was a land swindler and slave smuggler; Davy Crockett was a failure as both farmer and Congressman, probably a failure into being a second husband, and, in the end, unable to live up to a legend of his own making; William B. Travis was a debtor, an adulterer, and a horrible father; yet they are all representative of the frontier type, to various degrees, the men who turned the untamed wilderness of the American West into pure opportunity. It also serves as a decent introduction to the Texas Revolution, though the last chapter on actual battle of the Alamo was way too short. It was almost a letdown. Davis should have expended his talent, research, and industry into describing the muck mess that is the historiography and historical depiction of the battle (although he probably did that in his later book, specifically on the Texas Revolution, which I own but have not yet read). All in all, a brilliant book.

The Long Way to the Alamo
By Mark R. Brewer
THREE ROADS TO THE ALAMO is not really about the Alamo. Only a few pages are devoted to that epic battle. The book is a biography of the three most prominent men to have died there: David Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Travis. Each of their "roads" is quite long. Author William C. Davis has a reputation for detail, and he certainly lives up to it here. Parts of the book are dry and caught up in minutiae. This is especially so in the chapters that deal with Jim Bowie's false land claims.

These three men died as heroes at the Alamo, and that they certainly were. But they may not fit the popular image of heroes. Bowie was an especially unethical man, forging bogus land claims in Arkansas and Louisiana to such a great extent that officials in Washington D.C. took to calling all false land claims "Bowie claims." He sold land he didn't own, and went to Texas to escape arrest. He also lied to his Mexican father-in-law about his age and his wealth in order to win the man's daughter in marriage. He never invented the Bowie knife and never claimed to. That was done by his brother Rezin. In his defence, Bowie was a brave man, a ferocious fighter, and a natural leader. The Mexican's called him "the braggart."

William Travis ran to Texas to escape huge debt. He abandoned his wife and two small children, and his wife eventually sued him for divorce. He was also an excellent leader.

David Crockett (as he preferred to be called) was a good man and was honest to a fault, though he was also in debt for much of his life. Crockett was a U.S. Congressman from Tennessee, a Jacksonian Democrat who broke with Jackson when that president got his Indian Removal Bill through Congress. Crockett felt it was unfair to Native Americans. He was up for reelection in 1835, and said if he lost, he would "go to hell or go to Texas." He chose the latter. Like Travis, he also left his wife and children behind.

Crockett was the most famous of the three. He had a reputation as fighter, a hunter, and a frontiersman, all of which were true, but he wanted to be known as a gentleman. He did not wear a coonskin cap.

Davis dispels the myths that surround these men and the battle for which they are best remembered, and there are many of them. This is the great value of his book.

Brilliant book
By Demosthenese
I started out looking for a definitive biography of Jim Bowie and could not find one. But what I did find was this book, which wraps biographies of Bowie, David Crockett and William Travis together and separately until they all show up at the Alamo. The facts uncovered in this book are amazing. We all know that Travis was a lawyer who had some legal and social difficulties before moving to Texas, but this book spares nothing in the details. And Bowie ? A land swindler, forger, slave trader, liar. Again, the case made in this book is amazing. And Crockett ? We follow his career in the military, in Congress, and even in the route he took to get to Texas. This book is so well researched, it's scary. And well written as well. I loved it. And I learned a lot about three men who, no matter what their failings, were prepared to die for their belief in Texas. A great book. A brilliant book.
